Jobs market shows further signs of healing/Weekly New Claims
Jobs market shows further signs of healing
Jobless claims drop for the third time in four weeks; 4-week average drops
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42126930/ns/business-eye_on_the_economy/
WASHINGTON — Fewer people applied for
unemployment benefits last week, providing support for the view that
there will be stronger job growth this year.
And the nation's factories produced more cars, appliances, computers
and furniture last month, in a sign that manufacturing would continue to
rev up the U.S. economic engine despite the growing nuclear crisis in
Japan. Manufacturing output rose for the sixth straight month.
The Labor Department said on Thursday that applications fell to a
seasonally adjusted 385,000 last week, marking the third decline in the
past four weeks.
The four-week average for claims dropped to 386,250. That was the
lowest level since July 2008, providing evidence that the job market is
on a more solid footing.
Benefit applications below 425,000 signal modest job growth. But the
level of applications needs to fall below 375,000 to be seen as a sign
of sustained declines in the unemployment rate. Benefit applications
peaked at 651,000 during the recession.

I wish the new weekly jobless claims would go down more than this. I think it is still too high.

Not in Florida! It stinks to high heaven. A majority of the jobs available, and believe you me I would jump on anyone of them if someone would just CALL ME!!!, are P/T at $ 8.00 - 9.00 bucks an hour with no benefits.

It's like that here too. There are no jobs and whenever there is an opening, it is for a part time minimum wage job that gets thousands of applicants.gab1sco wrote:Not in Florida! These new weekly jobless claims don't mean anything. I don't see how they can claim that if a little less people got laid off last week than did the week before, that it means anything like the job market getting better. I wish it meant that but, it doesn't. It's still a huge amount of people getting laid off every week. Eventually, the new weekly jobless claims will have to go down because they will run out of people to lay off but, it still doesn't mean that anyone is hiring. They just love to spin this crap.

State-by-State unemployment claims, at a glance
The Associated Press | March 17, 2011 09:10 AM EST |
Fewer people sought unemployment benefits last week, marking
the third decline in the past four weeks. Economists expect that
applications will continue to decline as the economy improves.
Below are the states with the biggest changes in weekly unemployment
benefits and some of the reasons for the shifts. The state-by-state data
is for the week that ended March 5, one week behind the national data.
States with the biggest drops in claims:
Massachusetts: Down 2,482. The state provided no reason for the change.
Oregon: Down 1,680, with no reason provided.
Rhode Island: Down 1,120, reflecting fewer layoffs in the service and manufacturing industries.
States with the biggest increases in claims:
New York: Up 17,926, reflecting layoffs in the transportatin and service industries.
California: Up 13,388, reflecting the fact that state claims offices
were open for a full five days to process claims after a week in which
the President's Day holiday had reduced the time to process claims.
Illinois: Up 4,514, reflecting a return to a regular workweek for claims offices.
Pennsylvania: Up 3,907, reflecting higher layoffs in the construction, trade, service and transportation industries.
Texas: Up 2,828, reflecting higher more layoffs in trade, service and manufacturing industries.
Ohio: Up 2,246, reflecting more layoffs in the auto industry.
