On Saturday April 9th approximately
1,500 volunteers, public servants, non-profit agencies, faith-based
organizations, and citizens will assemble under one roof to help people who are
homeless in our community through Project Homeless Connect. This innovative
one-day event is about breaking the cycle of homelessness, increasing access to
services and ending chronic homelessness in Central Alabama. For one day,
Project Homeless Connect will give people experiencing homelessness the
opportunity to access an array of services in a system which is often difficult
to understand and navigate. Project Homeless Connect (PHC) links homeless
individuals, veterans, and families to housing, medical services,
identification services, veterans' services, employment services, pet care and
haircuts. Be a part of Birmingham's solution to homelessness.

Birmingham's Project Homeless Connect, an annual one-day, one-stop
event in April designed to help people out of homelessness, is in need
of assistance.

Organizers are seeking donations to provide the homeless with
much-needed state identification cards and for volunteers to work the
event that's scheduled for April 9 at Boutwell Auditorium.

Project Homeless Connect, which started in Birmingham in 2008, brings
together more than 60 nonprofit, government and social service agencies
in one location to present homeless people, who are referred to as
clients, with as many necessary services as possible to help empower
them to independence.

"It is the only place where everybody who has the ability to help a
homeless person over a hurdle is in one place," said Michelle Farley,
executive director of One Roof, formerly known as Metropolitan
Birmingham Services for the Homeless.

At Project Homeless Connect, volunteers work one-on-one with clients,
treating them with compassion and dignity to get IDs, apply for jobs
and housing and check on benefits. On the same day, the homeless can get
a free haircut, free medical exams, free clothing, meet with a pastor
or other spiritual director, and eat a good meal.
