Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re Housing Grants
25 Florida Communities Receive $8.6 Million to Prevent Homelessness
The Department of Children and Families (DCF) will award 25 Florida communities a total of $8.6 million in Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program grants to help homeless families move into rental housing, as well as current renters whose families are facing eviction because of past due rent or utilities.
The funds are available through the balance of a $21.5 million grant for the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program awarded to DCF in June 2009, and are from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
DCF will disburse the funds to grantee organizations in each of the 25 communities, which then will distribute the money to eligible individuals and families.. To qualify, a person or household must be below a set income limit for the community and must complete a case management review and plan for their housing stability. A list of grantee organizations and contact information is attached.
"The economic downturn has affected many hard-working families, whose bread winners have found themselves out of work for no fault of their own and this, sadly, has resulted in their losing their homes or being threatened with eviction,” said DCF Secretary George Sheldon. “We are hopeful that these grants will help sustain them through this difficult time, and they will be able to once again have the safety and shelter of a home that everyone deserves."
The grants are expected to fund services to more than 6,700 people facing homelessness in Florida. They include individuals, families, youth aging out of foster care, persons with mental illness or substance abuse issues, victims of domestic violence and veterans.
In 2009-2010, the Department funded 15 local grantees to serve a total of 47 counties with $12.9 million in grants under this program. Housing assistance has been provided to 7,000 persons as of the end of March 2010.
