Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
If the Dems want to make the cuts & the Repubs want to make the cuts.....it's pretty much in the bag isn't it??
What I mean is lobbying groups might be successful at stopping individual parts of the proposed bill.....but most of them will go thru
The Pell grant thingy for example.....when I was in college I couldn't get a 2nd Pell grant to go to school in the summer. They changed the rules on that a few years ago & now realizing what a bad idea it was they want to change it back.
As far as the Student Loan interest for grad students accumulating while they're still in school.....don't like it but don't see any way to stop it.
Just thinking in terms of conserving our energies & resources to focus on employment-related legislation like HR589 & the TAA extension.

Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
The proposed budget cuts are going to affect all of us. One program in particular that is in immediate danger is LIHEAP. This is a lifeline for those unemployed and underemployed right now. In most states where this is a moratorium on utility shut-offs for the winter, March 1 is the deadline. Folks need help and these cuts are aimed directly at people who need assistance the most.
Guest- Guest
Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
I agree that the 1/5 cut in LAIHEAP is a bad proposal.....& social service groups are probably gearing up right now to fight that one. A Repub on MSNBC just said he expects only 20% of the President's budget to pass. If you read of social service groups lobbying against the LAIHEAP cut please post the link(s) here.
I guess what I'm saying is that there is a limited window of time as you know. If unemployed people use our limited political capital over the next few days to attack the President's entire budget bill.....that will make opponents of HR589 very very happy. They know that our senators & congresspeople will take HR589 less seriously if we are also assailing them with faxes & calls against the President's budget bill.
I feel like a train wreck is coming in which the media & the politicians & the lobbyists use up the next 2 weeks arguing over LAIHEAP & whatnot.
Anyways once we have our *UI Exhaustees Clock* I'll feel more positive about the potential success of HR589.

Please let me add something that's really buggin me.....
There seems to be a complete & total *MEDIA BLACKOUT* & *POLITICAL BLACKOUT* on discussing the cost of the wars--
http://costofwar.com/en/
Not one single word about *ending the wars*.
When the Dems won a large majority in the House in 2006 it was supposed to be a mandate to end the wars. So far the wars are going strong & costing more than ever.

President's aides call for "shared sacrifice" in proposed budget cuts.
I'm sorry, but I really have nothing left to sacrifice.

A little history, from Tazzy:
In June 1937, the Roosevelt administration cut spending and increased
taxation in an attempt to balance the federal budget. The American
economy then took a sharp downturn, lasting for 13 months through most
of 1938. Unemployment jumped from 14.3% in 1937 to 19.0% in 1938, rising
from 5 million to more than 12 million in early 1938.

When I heard LIHEAP being cut I was dumbfounded. Tax cuts for the rich and I'm in danger of not getting a disconnection notice before March 1st. If there are any LIHEAP funds left that is. It's not just heat, it's my stove, hot water and clothes dryer.
Has anyone heard about food stamps? I heard WIC (women and infant care) has been cut. Shameless.
But the wars? The rich? Sure. No problem.
Edit: Just sent a message to the White House---- bottom line said he should be ashamed.

I agree Mark... I also have an issues bugging me. If nothing is off limits and most of the cuts will be on the backs of poor, marginalized middle class why is it not a top priority to cut the oil subsidies, ethanol subsidies. I mean I know the answer which is that the politicians have accepted money from these groups and will protect them with their dying breathe, but why is it missing from the discussion. Why is the WH avoiding putting these on the chopping block. I am not an Obama basher but I too am becoming tired of defending him. We all know that some stuff will pass in his proposal and some will not, so why wasn't it even put up for debate.

Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
From HuffPo link posted here:
White House OMB chief Jacob Lew told CNN that the budget is full of tough choices and defended the proposed cuts to home heating aid.
“Energy prices now are much more in line with where they were in 2008 before that price increase. And you know, we looked at the budget and we said we can't just level off at the new funding level,” he added.
What a bunch of baloney! Saw on local news last night that energy company here is proposing yet another rate hike!

""Not one single word about *ending the wars*.""
Exactly!! And to top it off Weeper Boehner says something to the effect of "WE are giving the American people what they want".
Really the money they are cutting generaly goes to helping poorer people, and money thats off the discussion list is for multi-national defense industry type corporations.
1) I am aware that there have been several hundred court cases in volving the 14th amendment giving corporations the equivalent of the same legal status as a "human entity" (with none of a citizens responsibilities)
2)It would be a far stretch of language for mr boehner to include these
corporate entities in his discription of what the American people want.
3) And lastly as far as I am aware of most living breathing human American citizens want some type of closure put on the wars efforts,
or at least some of the spending curtailed.
Why aren't you doing what the American people want in THAT direction??? Could thos corporate citizens opinion be more important???

Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
The only way to really balance the budget is to cut in defense and subsides to billion dollar corporations. Everything else is so small as to not really make a difference. There is also many billion spent on the wars that doesn't come out of the defense budget. This is money appropriated to buy new weapons that are manufactured by private companies. This is done like any other business deal. They send a guy to the pentagon and he sells them a new weapon. A good example is that new fighter jet that Obama killed. Even the military said they didn't want it and had no use for it yet we bought it anyway. We could still defend ourselves and do well in our "overseas contingency operations" if we just cut out this extra war money.
If you haven't you should see "Why We Fight". It's a documentary about President Eisenhower warning America that if we allow private companies to make a profit off going to war that we would always be at war. Nobody listened and here we are today.

Yep, I saw this on the news this morning. It is a full on attack on the unemployed and working poor. If anyone still thinks that Obama is a "socialist" or "liberal democrat" then they are very blind!

Since there will be a sh!t load more poor this should save tons of money. Wonderful plan. I guess the plan is to freeze, starve and wait you out. O Yea no more help with education since American is as dumb as its ever been. I quess investing in Education is not important. The new normal for America is 20% unemployment rate and the bottom barrel in the world education rate.
But if you are rich you will get richer, that is for sure. I wish I could play the stock market and bet on rich people.

I think there's more to this rhetorical move than meets the eye. It's
about painting today's GOP as extreme, by reminding people that there
was a time when Republicans had a far more moderate view of the proper
role and scale of government than today's crop of GOPers do.
I wonder if he is trying to appease some of the on the fence independents? Such as the teaparty, not the extreme nutjobs.
the GOP are galloping hypocrites. It has been
the GOP who have been EXPLODING the government in NO way Democrats ever
dreamed. Mainly in defense the GOP BALOONED the government. The
Democrats REDUCE government and are forced to reduce because of the
IRRESPONSIBLE deficit spending the GOP has accomplished over the last
30-40 YEARS! Sorry, Tea Party, you are wrong and Lose again!

Re: Proposed Budget Cuts targeted at Poor, Middle Class and Students
Do
you see the briefing on C-Span 2? The Budget Director explained there
ARE gains in education. It was also clear they looked at ALL of the
budget lines to pre-empt the GOP. There are a lot of programs for the
unemployed as it is for the e...conomy centered. The high speed rail IS an immediate job creator.
The
heating fuel cut was to bring it back down to match the current heating
fuel prices. It started in 2008 at $2.5 Billion. The only reason why it
increased was because due to a spike in fuel prices the last two years.
They looked at the prices, they are down, they are trending down, they
are predicted to stay down. That is another reason why they installed
the original funding level. That is how you budget responsibily and in
reality.
Education while it was cut the programs were cut were
the programs which were extarenous, but still grow the education
programs on the President's initiatives for Education. That is how you
cut the extras, but keep the education programs you need to meet the
goals you have set. It is hard, but is reality. There is indeed help in
the Pell Grant program.
Please remember, this is till a
proposal. The Democrats will also add and drop programs as well. The GOP
and the Tea Party just wants to cut which will threaten the economy and
the job markets. The GOP and the Tea Party are just wrong and will not
create responsible budgeting and deficit reductions.

We were told the war is over. Am I wrong? Now we're just keeping the peace and training troops to defend themselves? correct??? Why are we still there? 1 life lost over there is 1 too many. Only those in the political defense game know why and we (the American citizens) aren't one of the ins to this info IMO. It seems to be for that other country we don't know about in America. The other that the Pres refers to as getting educated, get a college degree and get good jobs. I don't know what else to think. It's like we're invisible and we don't get the code words being used because of the exclusion. I watch him today selling the same old thing and I wondered WHO he was talking to. Many here can attest to being educated and trained in our fields, so why don't we have jobs? It's baffling. Then Boehner on Meet the Press talking about cuts so our American dream can be obtained by our families and grandchildren. And he stood strong on raising the age for SS. I think the booze has done it's job.
In all there's a political game going on and we aren't included. It's we'll propose this and see what they'll come back with crap etc...
