Approximately 200,000 New Jobs Created In March: Surveys
The Labor Department's jobs report for March will be released next Friday at 8:30 a.m.
Surveys carried out by the financial news agencies say that the report might show that the economy added 200,000 new jobs in March. It would be the sixth straight month of job growth and the first time the number of jobs created in consecutive months was over 100,000 since April/May 2010.
Nonfarm payroll estimates
Reuters +190,000
Dow Jones Newswires +201,000*

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)-- Next week's calendar is packed with economic data from home prices to consumer sentiment. But the leader among all the reports will be next Friday's March employment report.
The last few job numbers have been disappointing as investor and consumer hopes have gotten ahead of reality. Perhaps as a consequence, economists are keeping their forecasts for March close to the February job data.
The median forecast of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires is that nonfarm payrolls rose by 201,000 in March, following a 192,000 increase in February.
The jobless rate is projected to remain at 8.9%.

I remember either last month or the month before maybe that they had predicted it to stay the same and they lowered it anyway.

Thanx GB (& Jen in another thread) for bringing attention to this article.
Usually when an article reports the anticipated U3 unemployment rate.....every major media outlet & his brother picks it up & spreads it around. Strangely this month this article came & went without much fanfare in the mainstream media.
Hmmmmm. 8.9%. If the 'experts' are correct it'll be a first for them in the last umpteen years. They're never right about what the rate will be.
Thru Pell Grants & other incentives to get the unemployed into colleges the Obama Administration & Congress have removed a number of people from the workforce this academic year (Sept. 2010 -May 2011). College students are a big group of what are called discouraged workers.* In June 2011 these folks will flood back into the workforce.....since now Pell Grants can't be used for sumer school classes. That will increase the unemployment rate this summer.
* Non-traditional older students often begin in a Winter Term that starts in January. This may help explain the increase in what's called Discouraged Workers starting in 2011--& as a result the drop in the U3 unemployment rate as of January when these jobless persons shifted from the U3 to the U6 category.

Re: Approximately 200,000 New Jobs Created In March: Surveys
The nonsense about *how many jobs were created in X month* is based on the BLS survey of employers called the Nonfarm Payrolls. That's what we hear when the media says 'employers created 100,000 jobs.'
A corporation called ADP has also been surveying employers for years. Their ##s are always way more inflated than the BLS ##s. For example if the BLS says 150,000 then ADP says 175,000.
Although the questions asked of the households interviewed for the Household Survey & the Gallup Survey (that results in the U3/U6 rates) have been published.....the questions the BLS & ADP ask of employers in the Nonfarm Payrolls Employers Surveys remain top secret.
People ask 'how do we know if the jobs are temporary or part-time?'
It's a great question.
Americans don't even know what questions the BLS asks of employers, much less what questions ADP asks of employers.

Re: Approximately 200,000 New Jobs Created In March: Surveys
When Ali and Christine on CNN announced the new jobs numbers awhile ago they talked about us 99ers and how we are still not able to find jobs. Christine mentioned us again about an hour later. I posted this on the check-in thread but I wanted to get the word out that we seem to be getting more attention from the media. Every little bit of hope helps when you're barely hanging on.

Thank you. It is significant to be acknowledged like that. The news I was watching is acting like everything is rosy and great.child of the King wrote:When Ali and Christine on CNN announced the new jobs numbers awhile ago they talked about us 99ers and how we are still not able to find jobs.
