I guess I don't have much sympathy - my brain is being wasted and I didn't immigrate from anywhere.

Why is the Huffington Post publishing an article like this?? Who cares??
Well.....hopefully people around the world will read it & not come here.
Like one of the commenters said.....that woman who was a doctor in Colombia but who's whining about the requirements she has to pass to become a doctor in the US.....shouldn't let the door hit her in the a$$. 'So many times I want to get my things and my passport and go back to my country.' Guess what.....we want you to go back there too.

Well, sympathy or no - fact supports that America was built by talented immigrants who creat innovation and build new industries thereby creating more jobs. Look at Silicon Valley.
Yahoo! was co-founded by Jerry Yang, a Chinese immigrant. Andy Grove, a Hungarian, co-founded Intel. The co-founder of Google is Sergey Brin, a Russian. The co-founder of Sun Microsystems is Vinod Khosla, an Indian. eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar, who is French.
These companies and many other Silicon Valley companies were founded or co-founded by talented Immigrants and they created many, many jobs for Americans.
Immigration is crucial to America's growth and vitality.

I agree 100% about immigration being the bedrock of the US.....but have no sympathy for immigrants who whine after they get here that the streets aren't paved with gold.....which they should have known before they came.

I've read your posts enough to know that you understand and support immigrants, phillymg. I was responding to OP and you posted while I was composing my response. Many posters on bb's like this one and even this one are very negative towards Immigration Reform. I see it as a current trend to restrict immigration and I hope its just a passing fad.

I'm still trying to figure out what was the point of that article. If the author was trying to drum up sympathy for immigrants.....he sure didn't accomplish that goal. All 3 of the people he interviewed are *legal* immigrants.....with bad attitudes.
Unfortunately thru US history in political cartoons.....anti-immigration has been a giant issue continuously since 1776. It must be a human trait to scapegoat newcomers.I see it as a current trend to restrict immigration and I hope its just a passing fad.

Ok I think I got it figured out. CNN & HBO are both running documentaries on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The author of the article is piggybacking onto the immigration topic to make a few bucks.

Yes, you are right, we need to enact fair and just immigration laws. Passing racially biased laws like Arizona's SB 1070 is ineffective and leads to a growing incivility and threats of violence towards Mexicans in the U.S.
The draw for illegal workers to come here is to find work. Since the fines for employers hiring undocumented workers is small, some build the cost of hiring illegal workers into their business plans. We need a bill that penalizes employers who hire them with stiff fines - $75,000 fine per worker would probably deter the practice.
Last summer, I saw a draft of President Obama's plan for Immigration Reform that laid out a plan to bring the undocumented workers into society. The senate's inability to move forward on a bipartisan bill does nothing but preserve a broken system with inefficient laws.
