AARP Oregon Offers Workshop For Older Job Seekers

BEND, Ore. -- In today's economy, it's hard enough finding a job.But hundreds of people over the age of 50 are learning more about finding employment in Central Oregon.AARP
Oregon's "Finding Work at 50 Plus" forum on Saturday presented ideas,
opportunities, and options for people of Central Oregon over 50 looking
for work.A recent AARP study found that the average duration of
unemployment for older job-seekers in January hit a whopping 44 weeks --
more than 10 months -- up from 42 weeks in December. Workers under the
age of 55 were jobless for 33 weeks, on average.Saturday's forum
allowed attendees to hear from others in similar situations, update
their resume and learn how to improve their digital brand.Coordinators say this is an important learning tool in a down economy."We
have about 160 people in the room, and we are glad to be here," said
AARP Public Outreach Spokeswoman Joyce Demonnin. "We always say when we
do these events, we hope that no one shows up. But right now. we know
there's a huge demand. and older workers have some barriers to
employment that we are trying to help them overcome."Demonnin
also said part of Saturday's forum talked about the use of social
networking sites like Linked In as a helpful tool for people over 50 to
use when trying to find, locate or help promote jobs.
