Mo. to Drop Extended Benefits For Unemployed

Post by Gigi on Thu Mar 31, 2011 4:24 pm

Missouri, will hurt thousands of unemployed people soon. The evil R's (Republicans) are at it again. Hurt the poor and unemployed, just kick them down and keep them down while the big corporations are racking in millions of dollars. Good work, republicans! Lembke will be next on recall list, soon. Never in my life have I seen ugly, spiteful, greedy people as the republicans. Maybe I haven't lived that long.

"JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -Thousands of people in Missouri who have been unemployed for more than a year soon will lose their jobless benefits, marking a significant victory for Republican fiscal hawks who are crusading against government spending.

When eligibility ends Saturday, Missouri will become the only state to voluntarily quit a federal stimulus program that offers extended benefits. Michigan, Arkansas and Florida also recently took steps to cut back on money going to the unemployed, although they targeted state benefits instead.

"We have to take a stand and say, `When is enough enough?' and send a message to the federal government, and hopefully shame them into doing the right thing and quit spending money that they don't have," said state Sen. Jim Lembke, a Republican from St. Louis."

These kinds of actions makes me really wonder about the bill for 99ers (HR 589). Even if it is passed, I have a feeling some states will not take the money. I am really hoping that I am wrong.

I believe that is the reason it is supposed to be added to tier one, all states pay tier1 so people in the states that do not pay EB would not be left out

Aren't the Tiers different than EB? Meaning, the state does not have to pay back Tier monies, correct?
I guess the hope would be, you don't have a whacko Governor running your state.

You are right - brain cramp! I forgot that it will be tacked onto Tier I. I'll fix my post above.

Decided not to edit my post because they really don't have to take it - this is what these governors are doing - not signing things into law.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC-08) Tier 1 FAQs

1. What is the federal Emergency
Unemployment Compensation (EUC08) Program?

EUC08 is a federally-funded program which provides extended unemployment
insurance benefits in all states to unemployed individuals who have already

Yes, all states pay EUC (tiers) and most states pay EB, but not all. EB money is from the fed but must be paid back

What's indeed strange is that *state* senators are elected only by the people in their state to address the interests of *only* the people in their state. Kansas doesn't look after California, Alabama doesn't look after New York, etc. That's what the state reps get elected for & get paid for.....to focus *exclusively* on the interests of the contstituents in state. Yet these 4 Missouri elected officials have taken it upon themselves to insert their fingers into the concerns of the 49 other states besides Missouri. While they're wasting time on filibustering a bill that deals with *federal* law.....these 4 guys & the rest of the Missouri legislature could be doing more important things.....like working on JOBS CREATION for their state.

Why aren't they creating jobs for their states? Good point Phillymg.

Need2B is correct that the lack of EB in the 10 states is a strong argument in favor of HR589.....in addition to the states that have lost/will lose Tier IV & EB as the unemployment rate drops.....more job-seekers will sadly & unexpectedly lose their only lifeline.

As well as 99ers there will be 56ers etc. advocating for HR589.

Imo the '99er' moniker was always quite unfortunate. It began back with HR3548 in Dec. 2009 when Congress added '6' more weeks in a Tier IV. Before that the max was 93 weeks. COINCIDENTALLY the BLS Household Survey used to ask if a person is unemployed '99 weeks' or more. (Now it asks '99-203 weeks' & '204 weeks or more.') The problem for a long time was that '99' was the number of both the max UI in many states & the figure in the BLS question. The '99' match was a convenient alliance between left & right to deny further weeks of UI--as in '99 weeks is enough!'

A limited number of long-term unemployed & underemployed people--in just half the states--can receive up to 99 weeks of unemployment insurance. However the other 25 states get many fewer weeks. PA is set to reduce to 93 weeks. Many states never got or no longer get the 20 weeks of EB.

Traditionally in the US temporary emergency unemployment compensation has always been extended till the U3 unemployment rate fell below 7.5%. This has been the case with all past recessions in which EUC & EB have been available. This is the time to get the word out to job-seekers in affected states that till the U3 rate is down to 7.5%.....& more jobs are available.....HR589 must pass now.

It is my understanding that the money that MO is refusing, is going to be distributed to other states. The MO senator knows this he is an arrogant, arrogant thoughtless man and when he filibustered again this morning it has caused many people to become furious. Some people are talking recall. EB in this case is Federally funded and I don't believe it had to be paid back but I could be very wrong about this but some of the earlier articles I posted stated refusing it did not reduce MO debt that is why so many people are angry with him.

Many thanx Pugsrit.....

The unemployed of MO are heroes suffering at the hands of Jim Lembke & his extremist pals. These creeps play to the TP audience at the peril of their immortal souls. 'They know not what they do.' --Jesus Christ

I was suppose to get EB until the end of June. These past two weeks have been rough but I am prepared and a friend is going to let me move in. It sucks to be close to 50 unemployed in this economy. I am praying and trying to pool any resource I can. I am going to try and get foodstamps. My rent is paid through April and utilities so I am going to enjoy living here while I can.
