99ers Tirelessly Advocate For Long Term Unemployment Rights

"An online advocacy group for the long-term unemployed, the American
99ers Union, posted a message on their website to all 99ers and their
supporters to urge Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) and House
Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) to work with Democrats toward the
passage of HR589, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act of 2011,
which would provide an extra 14 weeks of unemployment benefits to those
who had been out of work (through no fought of their own) for more than
26 weeks (the regular duration covered by unemployment compensation
insurance).

HR589 was a bill suggested to eliminate extra government
red tape (the creation of a Tier 5 category for unemployment extension
benefits) by inserting the extra weeks into an already existing Tier
while at the same time providing financial assistance retroactively to
those hard hit by the current economic downturn, those 99ers who still
found themselves jobless after their Tiers or benefits eligibility had
expired.

March For Jobs

The March For Jobs began when the website Public Records Detective
Journal took it upon itself to announce in early March that a national
rally needed to be held to bring awareness to 99ers and the growing
number of unemployed in the United States. Beginning with the premise
that America’s population of 99ers is growing and that it has become
imperative that jobs be created, the PRD Journal suggests that America
“needs a Nationwide march for jobs, just like the civil rights marches.”

With pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Selma Civil
Rights March embedded in the call to action, it is pointed out that
progress in the fight to create jobs and bring awareness to the
unemployment situation can be achieved via peaceful protest.
Ally

Lacking an ally among traditional interest groups, the 99ers have
taken their case directly to Washington, pushing for legislation to
create additional weeks of unemployment benefits and give jobless
Americans more time to find work. Support for such legislation could be
lawmakers’ ticket to winning over this valuable constituency.
Reps.
Barbara Lee and Bobby Scott have taken a stab at it, introducing a bill
to add 14 weeks of unemployment benefits. H.R. 589 has 74 co-sponsors,
all Democrats. House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric
Cantor"
