Back from the front lines, A TOUGH JOB MARKET AWAITS

Many recent veterans are having a difficult time finding jobs in this market, but there are programs to help.

Indeed, many companies are eager to hire veterans. Overall, those with military experience have the same unemployment rate — 8.9 percent — than the rest of the nation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics released in March.
But it is the most recent veterans who left the military after 2001 who face the most challenges. Their unemployment rate is nearly 30 percent higher than the rest of the nation. They have been forced to transition to civilian life during two recessions, one after the 2001 World Trade Center attacks and then a more crippling downturn, the Great Recession, that began nearly six years later with millions of Americans thrown out of jobs.
To add to their woes, many of the youngest members of the military don’t offer as much experience as other job candidates and haven’t finished their education. Frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan have limited some from furthering their studies.
