I really don't understand why food and fuel and not figured into inflation. For most people that has a significant impact on the family budget. If food and fuel prices go up, there is simply less money to spend on other things. If families have less money for things other than food and fuel, demand goes down for everything.

The biggest reason that food and energy are no longer part of the CPI is that if they were, the inflation numbers would be MUCH higher, and they would have to give social security recipients a major cost-of-living raise. They have been able to deny them this for 3 years running, which has saved the government many billions of $$$.

Not raising the federal "poverty level" - currently still at $10,830 (a mere $902.50 per month) per individual - eliminates MANY from much needed assistance programs, as well...resulting in those folks not being counted/represented in "official" reports of just how many American's currently living in poverty.
Paints a "prettier" picture, saves the feds. billions of dollars...
but doesn't reveal - does nothing to address - the truth of American poverty.
