The one that sticks with me is:
"Only 47% of the American workforce is fully employed"... in other words, 53% of American workers are struggling just to survive.
And we're "the richest nation" on Earth?

I agree. That just can't be right, can it?

"Only 47% of the American workforce is fully employed"...
Unfortunately that is correct. The article is factoring December
2010 unemployment rate of U1, & U3 through U6 which totals 53.00 (rounded up)

100.00% -53.00%= 47.00% "workforce" fully employed.

I get a kick when they announce the U3 unemployment rate for Jan 2011 being 9.00% when the U6 rate is 16.10%

"When you count the unemployed, underemployed, and discouraged workers - only 47% of the [American] work force is fully employed".

So, OK - I'm sure some small percentage of the 53% wanting to work full time - but unable to find full timework - has savings, or a retirement account, or family support to fall back on and are not struggling to survive.
That's still 53% of the work force that isn't engaged in employement to the extent they wish to be, or need to be.
Still seems a dangerously high percentage to me. Then take away all the other economic saftey nets being considered for cuts ... deficit or no deficit -it's an immoral act given the stagnant job growth in this country, and increased rate of off-shoring of jobs.

It’s scarier if you live in the State of CA.

Our unemployment rate went up in January from 12.4 to 12.5 and
CA paid out $23 Billion in unemployment claims in 2010. Our state is facing a
severe budget crisis (25.4 billion $ deficit) and there’s a special election set for June where our new
governor wants us to vote to cut $1.5 billion from the California welfare
program, Cal Works; $750 million from various services for developmentally
disabled individuals; and, $1.7 million from the state's medical insurance
program, Medi-Cal. Again, kick the people at the bottom to the curb.

Gov. Brown also wants to cut the above programs and raise
taxes to help pay for CalPERS (California Public Employees' Retirement System) provides
benefits to its more than 1.6 million members, including health insurance,
long-term care insurance, death benefits, mortgage program, and distribution of
pension and retirement-related financial benefits. CalPERS investments is
the nation's largest public pension fund and, given its size, it is able
to exercise significant pressure to make desired changes within the companies
in which it invests. Brown’s crony supporters (CalPERS members) contributed more
than $40 million in campaign funds. Among many other things, CalPERS is
killing California.

We have some of the highest taxes in the country, CA state
tax 9.08% and L.A. County 9.75%. Gas is up to $3.49 per gallon (regular) and
those of us not under Prop. 13 (which passed in 1978) pay extremely high
property taxes. We co-own with the bank a very small modest home and paid
$3,000 property taxes last year. My neighbor who has the exact same house only
paid $1,100 property taxes last year as she’s under Prop. 13. Prop. 13 was
passed to help senior citizens keep their property taxes low as many seniors were
not able to pay their property taxes (on a fixed income) and were forced to
sell their homes or have their homes sold in tax lien auctions. The Prop. 13
exception can be passed down to the senior’s children, and if not living, to
their grandchildren. Not fair, but that’s how it is.

Los Angeles is ranked the fourth largest economy in the
United States compared to other states (see No. 36)

If California's economic size were measured by itself to
other countries, it would rank the 7th largest economy in the world (see No. 35)

Article said that this is the worst unemployment since Reagan. I think it hasn't been this bad since Hoover

Re: 19 Scary Facts About Getting A Job In America

Post by Feyth on Wed Feb 16, 2011 12:33 pm

Last fall, I took note of a statistic, buried in a DOL report (sorry, don't have the link) that reported the percentage of Americans of working age that actually hold jobs. Of course, many of these people are not looking for work -- many have other financial support. Anyway, the number inspired me to write the letter below, which I have sent to numerous politicians, as well as to the press:

Dear Employed Americans:

While you may not be aware that only 58% of working age adults are actually employed, you are no doubt feeling the stress of carrying the rest of the country. The taxes taken out of your paycheck, the taxes you pay to the IRS, the sales taxes, property taxes and fees you pay for a myriad of services are propping up the entire economy.

Want some help?

* Demand that Congress support meaningful job legislation, and extend unemployment insurance until that is accomplished.

* Become involved with your own company's policies for hiring; advocate for hiring the long-termed unemployed.

* Volunteer for non-profits that assist people to gain employment.

We unemployed want to help you. We want paychecks that will enable us to pay the taxes and fees that will provide a good education for your children, safety for you and your neighborhoods, social services for your loved ones in need.

We want an income that will allow us to contribute to our consumer-based economy. We want your businesses to be successful. We want to buy your goods and services.

We want to become meaningful participants in your community, to raise this nation's standard of living, to bring prosperity to all hard-working Americans.

Thank you in advance for joining with us to help our country thrive. We look forward to your response.

Something missing somewhere

The total non institutional civilian labor force (Americans 16 years and older who are not in a institution -criminal, mental, or other types of facilities- or an active military duty) is reported as 238.889 million. Of these, we see:
Employed: 139.206 million people (58.3% of labor force)

Unemployed: 14.485 million people (6.1% of labor force)

Obviously, that can't be the total picture, we're only at 64.4%. This is why:
Part time employed for economic reasons: 8.931 million people. This concerns people who want a full-time job but can't get one.

Part time employed for non-economic reasons: 18.184 million people. Non-economic reasons include school or training, retirement or Social Security limits on earnings, but also childcare problems and family or personal obligations.
But the by far largest category "missing" from both the Employed and Unemployed statistics is the "Not In Labor Force": 85.2 Million people.

The BLS definition states: "Not in the labor force (NILF). A person who did not work last week, was not temporarily absent from a job, did not actively look for work in the previous 4 weeks, or looked but was unavailable for work during the reference week; in other words, a person who was neither employed nor unemployed." (Clearly, this does include lot of unemployed people).

To summarize: 108.616 million people in America are either unemployed, underemployed or "Not in the labor force". This represents 45.5% of working age Americans.

If you count the "Part time employed for non-economic reasons", you get 126.8 million Americans who are unemployed, underemployed, working part time or "Not in the labor force". That represents 53% of working age Americans.

So only 47% of working age Americans have full time jobs. While the official unemployment rate is 9.4%. Something's missing somewhere.
