Republican Lawmaker Hires Jobless Constituent To Work In His Yard
Republican Lawmaker Hires Jobless Constituent To Work In His Yard For $8 An Hour
"Kathryn Treadway of Goldsboro, N.C., lost her job doing medical transcription work for a hospital early last year. The 35-year-old hasn't had an income since April 16, when an impasse between Republicans in the state legislature and Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue halted her unemployment benefits."

Re: Republican Lawmaker Hires Jobless Constituent To Work In His Yard
I wonder if LaRoque and his wife would be doing some yard work this weekend. Oh, I forgot he's a pampered WA politician. No, I don't think so.
"Stephen LaRoque, the Republican who represents Treadway in the lower chamber of the North Carolina General Assembly, said he'd pay her $8 an hour to deal with dirt and debris in his three-and-a-half acre yard in nearby Kinston."
"Treadway, for her part, had told HuffPost earlier that morning that she didn't know if LaRoque was being serious. She worried that, if she showed up with a shovel or something, he might call the police.
Instead, LaRoque put her right to work.
But it didn't last long: Treadway quit after an hour."
"It was just too much. I'm not used to doing manual labor, and the crap he wanted me to do was something two men would do," she said after leaving. "I’m used to making $22 an hour. I'm not gonna sit there for $8 and hour and come home having a stroke."

OK if Stephen LaRoque was serious even if the job paid only $8/hr. he should have provided a full-time job (40 hrs./wk) with a health insurance plan--taking all the taxes out as required such as IRS, state tax, SS, medicare, workers comp, etc. If she were covered by workers comp & getting health insurance she might have considered staying despite the unreasonable physical demands of the job.
OMG there are *so many* yard/landscape services in & near Kinston NC.
http://kinston.north-carolina-services.com/home-garden/lawn-garden/
Particularly Deveau's Yard Service at 1801 Sunset Avenue in Kinston.
(252) 523-0153
WTH is NC House member Stephen LaRoque talking about?? He says he can't find anyone willing to service his yard?? All he has to do is call Deveau's Yard Service--they have plenty of workers ready & willing to do the job. All Stephen LaRoque has to do is call Deveau's Yard Service.

Re: Republican Lawmaker Hires Jobless Constituent To Work In His Yard
Hi everybody..
I believe I've been registered here for awhile, but I have never posted before. I post regularly at Huffington Post, particularly on threads dealing with employment or unemployment.
The situation with the NC legislator is among the most galling that I have read about recently. The man has apparently registered and posted on that thread at HuffPo, though his replies are now buried.
But one of the irate posters, not a constituent, wrote him an email. He wrote her back, basically calling the unemployed lazy and spouting off.
The man clearly should not be in public office.
If you haven't yet checked that thread at HuffPo, or you haven't checked it since Friday, I urge you to read the last few posts. Utterly disturbing, but a clear indication of what so many (mostly Republican) lawmakers feel about the unemployed.
