After news accounts about the practice and requests from concerned lawmakers, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has jumped in, trying to figure out whether it's widespread and could violate federal job discrimination laws.

They are not hiring unemployed people....I see so many listings that state you must have current work experience....and the employers do not want to hire people who have gaps in their employment....So yep companies are not wanting to hire the unemployed

I recently got rejected from a telemarketing job because of this. I've started listing myself as a freelance marketing/training person to hide this gap but for some employers they want recent full time experience.

I have a half a notion to write to the EEOC about a job I was rejected for today because I'm a man. I know I have been rejected in the past for my age and being unemployed.....but sexual discrimination was a first for me.

P/T, OFFICE HELP 5 Days a wk., 9A-2P Calling customers and for parts, reliable Crystal River (352) 563-1600

Please, nothing personal ladies, but a man with 20 yrs experience in car dealerships can't do this?

How do you know you were rejected for this? I know myself I've been rejected for reasons like this. Last year I got rejected for a PR position because at 38 I was deemed too old. I knew walking in and seeing all the recent grads I had little chance.

Places are getting more and more blunt about discrimination. I actually had a woman on the phone ask for my race.

Because when I called their phone number to inquire about the position they told me they were looking for a woman.

Yep that is definitely discrimination. I actually had one place tell me they wanted a 18-25 woman with a slim figure and another asked me my race because they only hired people of "European descent".

Are Companies Not Hiring Unemployed People? (USA Today - 2/16/11) Empty Re: Are Companies Not Hiring Unemployed People? (USA Today - 2/16/11)

I had an experience just yesterday. I got called for a dept of labor voc rehab job and when I got there was told it was for the "technical" side of the job? Anyway they take me into this little room and leave me with a computer that could barely work and gave me three pages of stuff of do, excell spreadsheets, etc. I can do those but I noticed that the woman taking me back was the oldest person in the joint. Everyone was around 24-30yrs old. She acted like someone was making her do this for me anyway. Said she would be back in one hour, well I waited for 1 1/2 hours and decided to venture out into the office area to look for her, finally found her way back in a cubicle (hate those things) and she casually looked up at me and said "oh yea, I'm sorry I was just about to go home, forgot all about you"! Then she proceeded to walk me out and I asked what is next in the process, she said"If you passed this, and most older folks don't, then you get an interview, if you flunked it, you won't here anything and proceeded so almost slam the door in my face! What a trip! Rolling Eyes

Wow someone actually said most people don't pass the test? While in theory I get what she's saying it's discrimination. In defense of her (though she was wrong) when I taught computer programs most older people didn't pass those tests because generally they haven't had the experience on the programs that younger people have had. No, it's not fair but it's the way of the world now.

This is why I've actually started putting "social networking experience" on my resume because you'd be surprised how many ads for PR (a very youth obsessed field) requires it. I often wonder it it's to screen out older people.

What I thought was the kicker is this job is with the dept of labor!! Plus I am about 10 yrs younger than she was! Just getting tired of being treated like I am ready to get the bucket. I am 50 (just turned) and never in my life would I think that someone at that age was "old". My version of old was always around 70. He is my suggestion, he, he since they want to treat all of us in our late 40's and 50's like we should be retired, well then change the age for social security to 55 that way all the younger know it alls can take over and us "older folks" can go ahead and retire and get on with our lives, although there is no way I could live on my social security not with the cost of living, but there is greeter jobs at walmart!! he, he. Sad too cause I always thought I would stay working with the state until around 63 and retire, me and a lot of others like me here. Most folks think the discrimination is only within the corporate world, it is rampate in government working, and they don't seem to care at all.

I worked at a government agency and yep discrimination is alive and well. They had a "recent grad" program but no one else. I don't think 50 is old, but I am 40 and apparently that is old now too.
