I thought I seen it all but this is outrageous! THROW THE BUMS OUT OF OFFICE NOW!
WASHINGTON -- Republican leaders in Congress on Tuesday offered their support for a plan the White House is considering to help the 6 million long-term jobless get back to work.

The Obama administration has suggested it is looking at a program called Georgia Works, which allows businesses to train jobless participants for eight weeks without having to pay them. The program is voluntary for workers and businesses.

"Reportedly your administration is looking at the 'Georgia Works' program as a potential model" for reforming the unemployment insurance system, wrote House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) in a Tuesday letter to President Obama outlining possible areas of agreement on job creation.

Obama is sounding like a Republican.

I have a similar program, my workers pay me. They line up jobs, use my tools, materials and knowledge and we split the profit. If they were not making twice what folks with 'jobs' are making they would be pissed.

I don't agree with making people work for free, but on the other side of this? They will still be collecting unemployment checks plus some sort of small stipend added? Is it really all that different than asking the unemployed to do community service work a few days a week to earn their checks. I know many opposed that idea as well, but me? I'd be happy to work for what I'm being given. I would RATHER work for what I'm being given.

I guess what I really see happening with this is- yes, it is "similar" to many states' programs of collecting benefits while training, and not having to do "job search" while training, but statistics show 3/4 of those who go through this program do NOT get hired by the company "training" them, so they are right back where they were 2 months before. So do we look at this as a bargaining chip, like maybe the only way the administration can get the gotp to go along with extending unemployment? I will be really pi##ed if Obama puts this into action by executive order, as he said "We will not wait for Congress" when it comes to his jobs bill. I agree with CiK- I would rather have an actual job, with at least the possibility of starting to pay into my social security, maybe even have health benefits (yea, I know that's stretching it) maybe even start to accrue seniority! Freakin' GOTP! And yes, the idea of doing "community service" in exchange for benefits, they used to call that the "chain gang"....

What if we've already exhausted our benefits? I have, does this mean I'll have to work for free and no benefits? And what kind of training too? I have a Masters and years of professional experience, no way am I "training" for free in a field that is way below my skills, like call centers. I don't need "training" I need a job. I am not unskilled.

nwp-
Don't want to sound mean or anything, but - I also have exhausted all of my benefits (as of April 2010), which means "we" would not have to work while training for "free", if you do not qualify or collect benefits, no one can "make" you work for, or apply for any job whatsoever, I guess at worst we would be "excluded" from "training opportunities"... we would benefit from this if, and when, legislation similar to HR 589 is passed in conjunction with or as a part of the American Jobs Act. But understand, if you start to receive benefits again (and me, too) what you so want not to happen (having to work in a job beneath you) may be reality for at least two months while you receive the EUC benefits that we all may get. It doesn't mean forever, we do what we have to do..... and I only have an associate degree...hmmmm. It won't be for free, you will be collecting UI again, get it? I've thought long and hard about this, always having that "gut feeling", but the tide is turning, and I think circumstances are such that something will come out of this for us. Stop being so negative, it is a serious distraction. I'll take part in this- it wouldn't be the first time for me- late last year, feeling desperate and looking at all options, I went to the Workforce center to see if I could get benefits while in school or training. I was, and received benefits while taking a college vocational course. I didn't have to do any job searches (although I did anyway), but I still wasn't able to use those skills to gain a job.
My biggest beef with this "training" thing is that if and when that employer decides not to hire you, you are back at square one. But at least you will have had some income for awhile.

nwp- I just can't seem to give up on you, for someone with such an education, you don't seem to have any common sense. I don't mean that to be a nasty comment. We are all so stressed out and stretched out anymore, it's hard to see the way ahead. Everyone here is in the same boat, no matter our level of "education". The tide MUST turn in our favor soon, or America is truly lost.... hang on, friends, darkest before the dawn.

I doubt I'd get an extension since I exhausted it awhile back and I was receiving railroad which is different. Anyway, I would never consider taking a job that was paying less than unemployment. I would also never take a job for free unless it was one with true potential. A call center job? no way.

And if this is an idea for unemployed what about those on welfare? Never any mention of them. Unemployment taxes people whereas welfare doesn't. If unemployed have to do this so should they.

Obama needs to concentrate on bringing jobs back as well as deporting visa workers.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/08/obama-jobs-plan-bridge-to-work-program-long-term-unemployed_n_953838.html

At least participants in this proposal will never receive below minimum wage.. oh boy!

Bridge to Work programs would be different from Georgia Works in several
ways. Under the Obama proposal, states would be required to ensure
participants earn no less than the minimum wage. So if a jobless
worker's unemployment insurance benefit amounted to less than the
minimum wage, states would have to boost the benefit.

"We're going to deem these [Emergency Unemployment Compensation]
benefits wages and provide support for states to top up benefits if
necessary to comply with the minimum wage," the official said. "If
states want to structure programs so employers have skin in the game,
we’re not going to stop them."

Participants in the program will be covered by workers' compensation
laws. As the FLSA requires, states will be required to prevent
businesses from using trainees instead of hiring new workers, and
businesses will not be able to use Bridge to Work participants if a
strike is in effect or if doing so would violate a collective bargaining
agreement.

This plan is ridiculous......I don't see how this is going to help create jobs.......Now the unemployed have to work for their unemployement check.......Totally unbelievable.......We have already worked hard for those unemployment benefits.......What we need is a real jobs creation bill.......that creates jobs NOW......not this smoke screen bill that gives the false belief that people are going to be put to work and everything is going to be fine........what a joke.......

It really is. What I want to know is why those on unemployment will now have to work and why welfare will not (unless that's another plan). Those receiving unemployment pay taxes and have to prove they are looking for a job.

Obama is a joke but sadly so are all the Republicans. If he was serious about a job bill he's make it easier to bring back jobs and tax companies that outsource. But nope, no mention of this.
