Re: Obama Promotes Jobs by Education
I guess that'll keep the university and community college workers employed at least.
All we have to do is look to Egypt to see what happens when you have an entire generation of highly trained/educated people ready to enter the work force with NO job prospects and a corrupt government (yes - I mean the U.S.).
Good plan.

Re: Obama Promotes Jobs by Education
Couldn't get past the first paragraph without laughing. I am almost 55 years old, so if I go back to school again to improve my math and science skills, I will get a job?
I barely got by in those two subjects when I was a teenager in high school. How am I going to do it as a "baby boomer" suffering from CRS????

DIRI:: That first paragraph hit me square in the eyes. Its just all so effing HILARIOUS. The Man is so desperate digging for solutions. Doesn't he realize how many products come into our country from overseas that has nothing to do with math & science??? Electronics will always stay there.
What about soft goods like toys, textiles and clothes. Hell, even Tommy Hilfiger has all of his production out of this country.
Give me a break Little Man. You're going to have to visit every American corporation, designer label and retailer to get them to pull their work out of Mexico alone. Where's the business model for that???
I loathe people who think we are the sheep they think we are!!

Lawrence Mishel's Jan. 12, 2011, report for the EPI.
http://epi.3cdn.net/67ee506f20f88f8ee7_l7m6ii9g8.pdf
What Prez Obama seems to be addressing are the abysmal high-school graduation rates in this country--
http://www.higheredinfo.org/dbrowser/index.php?measure=23
Mishel agrees that young people in our country need support to improve their educations.....but older laid-off workers who are highly skilled, highly trained, & in many cases highly educated need JOBS.
http://epi.3cdn.net/67ee506f20f88f8ee7_l7m6ii9g8.pdf
The challenge we face with high and persistent unemployment exceeding 9% is not better education and training for those currently unemployed. Rather, we need more jobs. Moreover, the reason we have seen a huge increase in wage and income inequality over the last 30 years is not a shortfall in the skills and education of the workforce. Workers face a 'wage deficit' much more than a 'skills deficit.' ….. The challenge, in my view, is to provide a much broader path to prosperity, one that encompasses those at every education level.

Mishel sounds more like an American President than Obama.
Shameful the malarky the Little Man comes up with.
Thanks Philly for the post.

Re: Obama Promotes Jobs by Education
Why do you refer to the President of the United States as 'the Little Man'?? Do you think things would be so much better if John McCain had been elected president?? I don't agree with everything President Obama has done or is doing.....but I'm positive that if the Repubs had control of the WH & the Senate our country would be in much bigger trouble than it is now.

I live in a small town in the northwest corner of RI. It is considered the "boonies", however, at one point there were over 10 thriving textile mills here. They survived the Great Depression and kept my grandparents, as well as other residents, from suffering the effects of that time period. Beautiful houses were built, villages within the town popped up, independently owned stores opened and thrived. Post Offices were built, mill owners provided funding for new schools and libraries, etc. These textile mills were still operating in the sixties and some through the early seventies. One by one, they moved south where the cost of production was cheaper, i.e. minimum wage was lower, heating expenses were lower, etc. With each mill that closed, another local business closed. Before the 1980's, every mill was gone, abandoned and just about everyone burned to the ground by vandals. Main St. basically closed up. Today there is only one family run independent business remaining - the rest of Main St. is a ghost town.
The mills that moved south eventually found cheaper labor overseas during the 80's an 90's. I can't even remember the last time I saw an article of clothing or other soft goods with the label "Make in the USA".

President Obama has a voice. He used it well in the 2008 Presidential Campaign. It is time he found that voice again. He appears to have lost it. I agree, we would be in much worse shape if McCain were elected, however our President needs to stand up to the Republicans and their threats. They seem to think they control our country and it is time for President Obama to set the record straight.

However.....knowing President Obama's psychology.....calling him nasty names like the teapartiers do isn't the way to get things accomplished.

I totally agree with that. I was just saying that we all know that he has a strong voice. I wish he would use it now.

I rooted for Obama to win, Philly. My new reference to him as The Little Man stems from my HUGE disappointment that his actions are not living up to his B I G campaign agenda. His backbone has shrunk & disappeared.
I realize he has a long haul to tug on his back but his psychology only goes so far. This country is crumbling at his feet. This largesse of a national crisis needs expeditious, heavy handed action in more areas than jobs.
I can't help but feeling he's in waaayyyy over his head. He should acknowledge that and step aside. His coming into office is the wrong timing. He probably would flourish in rosy, easy to manage eras.

If he stepped aside, Biden would become President, which I don't think would be that bad, but what would really be bad is Boehner would become Vice President! OMG! What if something happened...

What you describe DIRI was the life force of New England. Textiles, paper goods, even tools and apparel accessories ran through all the original colonies in their hayday. They're closed up and gone here, too. Cereal and Fruit of the Loom are just a few of the diehards left and there are many more -- they just don't have the manpower like they did now that so much is automated. If one Hershey plant is left in PA, seriously, how many workers can it possibly sustain?
Maybe everyone will have to be educated in this country, even if its trade school? Blue collar, decent money making opportunities are becoming prehistoric. Then what about O.J.T. like so many of us had the luxury to take advantage of? I don't know...
Re: Obama Promotes Jobs by Education
Obama should "step aside"...? And who - or what - do you imagine would fill that vacuum if he did? For all his short-comings (at least in our short-sighted eyes) - President Obama provides some balance of power right now.
Is there a super hero hiding somewhere who CAN take on the wave (tsunami!) of insanity from the right?

Re: Obama Promotes Jobs by Education
I'm glad to hear the college employees may have a job. My DH works at a college and that is good news to hear since that's all we have to live on at the moment. The problem I have is his pay is too low to survive on and pay tuition and too high for me to have a Pell Grant and to low to get a loan. I was approved for WIA and then our county ran out of money a few weeks before classes started. So I am back on a waiting list......a really long waiting list.
Besides I would be 59 or 60 by the time I graduated IF I could start now and I'm sure being that old will make me highly attractive as an employee somewhere. NOT.
So if Arthur doesn't sit in maybe I can walk like an Egyptian at some point.
Other than people presently employed at the colleges/universities, the plan is just plain dumb, IMO. A CETA type program should have been implemented instead of the stimulus or along with but my fear now is it is past too late for any CETA type program to happen.
