Trade Deficit Widens On Oil Spike; Jobless Claims Up

(AP) A surge in oil prices helped push imports up at the fastest pace
in 18 years in January, giving the country the largest trade deficit in
six months.

A widening trade deficit is bad for the U.S. economy. When imports
outpace exports, more jobs go to foreign workers than to U.S. workers.

Also, the number of people seeking unemployment benefits rose last week, only the second increase in six weeks.

So, how are they going to explain the new weekly claims going back up when they claim everything is so rosy?
They didn't even mention it on HLN today and they usually do every week. Suspect

There has to be another word to describe the unemployment rate. The English language has millions of words, yet they only seem to use one.

The latest report covers the week after the Presidents' Day holiday,
when many government offices were closed. Applications usually rise in
weeks following holiday-shortened weeks.

I hadn't read any of the articles yet. Here's their lame excuse. Rolling Eyes

Here we go again! The numbers go up and the numbers go down, the numbers go up and the numbers go down. This is like a roller coaster ride to nowhere.

I thought the picture of a bouncing ball would be suitable for this topic. Number of Weekly Jobless Claims Rise Amid Downward Trend? In plain English, Unemployment Number Went Up 40508

WASHINGTON -- The number of people seeking unemployment benefits rose last week. But the rise comes after applications hit their lowest level in nearly three years, and economists expect further declines as the economy improves.
Applications rose by 26,000 to a seasonally adjusted 397,000 during the week ended March 5, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The latest report covers the week after the Presidents' Day holiday, when many government offices were closed. Applications usually rise in weeks following holiday-shortened weeks.
Applications below 425,000 signal modest job growth. But they need to fall consistently below 375,000 to signal a sustained decline in the unemployment rate. Unemployment benefit applications peaked during the recession at 651,000.
The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose to 392,250. The average fell to its lowest level since July 2008 two weeks ago.

The only thing a one-day boycott will do is hurt business for the gas station trying to sell you the gas. Don't get me wrong, boycotts work, but only if you stick with them for a long time. If you're just going to buy gas the next day, chances are good nobody at the top of the supply chain is going to notice.
