Michigan
Gov. Rick Snyder has signed a bill continuing federal jobless benefits
while reducing the length of state-level unemployment benefits for new
filers starting in 2012. It reduces state jobless benefits from 26 weeks
to 20 weeks as of January. It also will allow up to 150,000 Michigan
residents to continue receiving extended federal unemployment benefits
they otherwise would lose by the end of the year

"There is no valid reason why keeping federally-financed Extended
Benefits in place in Michigan should require a permanent reduction in
the 26 weeks of unemployment benefits paid in our state’s UI program,"
Rick McHugh, a staff attorney with the National Employment Law Project,
said in a statement. "The Governor’s actions today mean that Michigan
will be the only state paying less than 26 weeks for their maximum
duration of benefits in the U.S. Michigan has paid 26 weeks of benefits
since 1954."

Re: Michigan Becomes First State To Curtail Jobless Aid
This makes me hopping mad. The first article implies that it helps those with EB get 20 more weeks by cutting the first round of UI to 20 weeks. Its misleading.
The second part that burns me is that Republicans are so concerned with cutting benefits to the unemployed and needy and they passed those tax cuts for the rich. It's wrong.
