The Unemployed have been screwed again

"I just read this and it really pisses me off!
"But there’s bad news for some taxpayers. For instance, in 2009 unemployed workers could exclude up to $2,400 of unemployment benefits from income; that provision did not get extended for 2010, said Steve Henley, national tax practice leader with CBIZ MHM, in Atlanta.
“For some reason, they decided not to extend that,” he said. “That’s probably a little bit of a surprise for some taxpayers.”
"Isn't that just adding insult to injury??! We're unemployed, barely surviving, and WE get no tax break!
"But the richest 2% get billions in tax breaks!
"This country is so COMPLETELY F'd up, it's just beyond comprehension!
"I think they should change the motto on our currency. Somewhere on there it should say, Take from the poor and needy; Give to the rich and greedy!"
"I haven't done my taxes yet but I have a feeling that I'm going to have to file for an extension of time to pay them. Even if I owe "only" $200-300, I am not going to be able to pay them unless I get a job before April 15th...

Yea, we knew that. Fortunately for the 99ers, it won't affect us - we didn't make enough to even have to file.

Re: The Unemployed have been screwed again
We been screwed so much I think we are getting numb to it . For 2009 taxes with the 2,400.00 exemption I was refunded $ 1,100.00 and it seemed like I was rich! This year $350.00. I am grateful, but with the tax breaks given to the rich it makes me wanna puke! I am sick to death of their actions as they seem to grow worse daily. And that would be even more so if the crooked bastards worked like most humans do! Did I hear they have ANOTHER BREAK coming?

Re: The Unemployed have been screwed again
For those still receiving unemployed benefits, it is really important to check the box to have taxes witheld. I am a seasonal tax preparer & am doing returns for the unemployed who got benefits all year (2010), had no taxes witheld & have to pay the IRS. I understand they needed all the money during the year (who doesn't) but the IRS will charge interest until the owed taxes are paid off, so you end up paying more in the long run.
I know it all sucks.

What about all our 401Ks that were taken out. We have to pay tax on our own money that we did not want to take out! Some have to pay penalties.

That's what aggravates me about our state (IN.) They do not take taxes out and in 2008 I owed them over $ 400.00. They bled me dry. Just could not plan ahead.

On the 401Ks withdrawals, if you used it to pay COBRA medical premiums or paid for education for yourself or your children (dependents), the penalty can be waived.

You can call the IRS and work with them. They will work with you, and actually help. If you owe that amount, I would call them, they just might waive it.

On the other site was a IRS thread on how to go about filing for extensions, and the like. Is that original poster here, and if so, can you re-post this important info?

All that info was pulled. I will try to find it on the IRS website and post. Great idea, by the way. Without that 2,400 exemption this year, a lot of folks are going to owe money they don't have.

And they conveniently forget that we DO pay taxes on our benefits, whether at tax time or by the 10% taken out of our weekly benefits. So when the give those average weekly benefits, the figure is much lower due to the taxes we pay.

Be careful about extending your negotiation period with the IRS, your penalties will also continue to increase even while they negotiating with you.

Re: The Unemployed have been screwed again
Every time anyone buys anything it is taxed at the local level (sales tax)
If i sell a car for 1,000 at 6% tax theres 60$, if the new owner sells it theres another 60$ the more turnover on the goods the more the tax.
When talking about taxes and NO taxes they are mostly refering to Federal Tax.

As long as you file your Individual Return on time, with a statement explaining your hardship, and file Form 4868, Application for Extension, also due by April 18, late fees and penalties may be waived.
