It's going to happen folks, people ARE waking up. I know it's a slow, hard road that's filled with potholes and disappointments, but hang in there.

This is for Oregon only and not a national bill.
At least Oregon is trying to take care of its own.

But if more states start pushing for stuff like this, even if it isn't your state (I'm in KY, we all know what that means) there will be more attention brought to the issue overall and that's what we need, attention. Attention so that it can't be ignored on a federal/national level any longer.

Agreed!
I wish that I knew how to get MoveOn involved in our cause. Imagine the power that they could bring to our cause - major protests in each state. But one problem facing the unemployed is that we don't have any money to get there. But I believe that if the unemployed in the cities chosen would unite, it could send a powerful message.
We are nearly invisible now!

Re: Push for unemployment extension heads West.
Is this how its going to go? Individual states, but mostly federal money? Because Walker in Wisconsin already sent back $800 million in rail money, he's not going to go for this...State Democrats say the push is an attempt to avoid an increasingly dire
employment situation in the state. The proposal would be funded in part
by federal funding, tapping intoa federal emergency fund that would
provide nearly $250 million. The state of Oregon would provide an
additional $30 million in funds.

This is great news! At a time when nine states refused to accept the feds money for extended benefits at least one state is trying to take care of their own.

Re: Push for unemployment extension heads West.
Does OR currently get 99 weeks?? Looking at their site & another site.....it seems like claimants in OR currently can get only 79 weeks.
http://www.employment.oregon.gov/EMPLOY/UI/eb_faq_11-17-08.shtml
http://www.nwcn.com/news/oregon/Unemployment-benefits-extended-for-Oregonians-99136029.html
Maybe what the OR legislature is doing is passing a law to allow Oregonians to get the additional 20 weeks?? Not sure.

Re: Push for unemployment extension heads West.
Thanx Zeke. Wonder *what funds* the OP's article is talking about.
Found the original article on Oregon Live--
http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2011/03/oregon_lawmakers_look_to_exten.html
The total cost of the two bills (one adds 20 weeks & the other adds 6 weeks for a total of 26 weeks) is $255 million. The state of OR will kick in $30 million. Apparently there's a Federal Emergency Fund that will give OR $225 million.
This is interesting news. If there exists *already budgeted federal $$* to extend UI benefits on a state-by-state basis.....then why don't the rest of the high-ue states apply for it?? What's the cutoff rate for a state to qualify for the $$?? Wonder if a state must be over 10% ue to get the $$??

Re: Push for unemployment extension heads West.
Max in Oregon is 99 weeks, with the EB, HEB benefits.
Oregon Wants To Work has a rally in Salem for this and other legislation, on Monday March 7th.
Excerpt from an email to me:
There is a critical Rally for Jobs this Monday, March 7th in Salem. We will gather at 12:00 p.m. on the steps of the State Capitol to advocate for good job-creating legislation and the need to address Oregon's unemployment now.
Free transportation by bus from Portland is available for all. Meet no later than 9:45 am at Machinists District Lodge 24; 3645 SE 32nd Ave, Portland. Buses depart 10 a.m. for Salem.
A host of legislators, workers and leaders, including Governor John Kitzhaber are set to speak
Oregon seems to be the grassroots political action state.
