GREAT NEWS! - President Obama To Tell Arab World U.S. Eager To Help Them Realize Economic and Political Dreams Empty GREAT NEWS! - President Obama To Tell Arab World U.S. Eager To Help Them Realize Economic and Political Dreams

Post by gigichicago Thu May 19, 2011 1:46 pm

This just made my day! I am so proud to be an American. My president will tell the Arab World that we will help them realize their dreams. How proud I am today. As an American out of work over 2 years with no financial help and ignored by my goverment, I willingly want to help the other unemployed around the world with $1 billion financial help maybe more. Yes, President Obama let's help the Arab world and kick the over 4 million unemployed Americans die without money and jobs. Just ignore the 99ers, we will all go away by 2012 election time. Yes, good idea! Give out (loans?)billions and billions and billions to foreign countries but give zero amount to the Americans that are hurting financially. BRAVO!!

Sorry if I offended anyone but I am disgusted with Washington and especially with Obama.

"On Thursday, President Obama will try to convince the Arab World that the U.S. wants to shift its engagement in the region from a military one to a political and economic engagement that will help the people of the region realize their dreams."

“All of these countries share untapped potential of its people,” a senior administration official said. “The majority of the population is under 30. Four million people [are] entering the labor force every year. In Egypt alone, unemployment was estimated to be 30 percent. And so there’s a great deal to be done to ensure that the benefits of economic reform are widely shared and bringing people into the work force to create jobs and opportunities.”

"The U.S. will also help Egypt regain access to global capital markets, guaranteeing up to $1 billion in borrowing to finance infrastructure, and support job creation through our Overseas Private Investment Corporation. The White House will also support efforts to authorize the establishment of an Egyptian American Enterprise Fund to stimulate private sector investments and promoting projects to generate jobs.

Details about the exact price tag was not forthcoming, though the officials suggested the relief of debt and investment would cost roughly $1 billion over a few years. The loan guarantees would support roughly an additional billion."

Treason??? Egypt has been one of our few friends in the Middle East. I have doubts about foreign aid generally, but this is a small amount (100 million or so a year for ten years is pocket change in Washington) and if it results in some stability there I'd prefer it to military action such as the hundreds of billionsof dollars and thousands of American lives wasted in the Bush wars.

In spite of Republican claims to the contrary, I firmly that there is more than enough wealth in the US to support an effective, sustained program for the unemployed, including us exhaustees, as well as modest funds that have a chance to promote peace in the Middle East. I see the Johnny-come-lately GOP budget hysteria as a smoke screen for their real agenda, which is the shredding of the safety net, including unemployment benefits, Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid and further reducing taxes on the wealthy and on large corporations.

I don't think the money is what outrages. What makes me want to scream my anger from the rooftops is our POTUS's ability to stand up and speak out for anyone and everyone BUT America's middle class and unemployed right now. Where is his voice for US? Once again, the silence is so incredibly deafening. Why won't he stand up for AMERICA? I don't want to hear because the 'republicans won't let him'. I'm really tired of excuses like that. They don't control his VOICE and he won't even address the issues of the vanishing middle class publicly. If he won't stand for us? Who will? If he won't stand for us? Doesn't that speak volumes about him standing against us? I just want to hear him say he knows we're here, he knows we're suffering, and he'll do the best he can to help. Is that really too much to ask from our President?

It's been a few months, but he did say this: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/12/02/obama-helping-the-unemployed-will-help-the-economy/

Yes, I'd like him to explicitly mention us exhaustees and make us a personal crusade. However, I don't see this as indicating that he is standing against us. I have no idea what it must be like to walk in his shoes, and while I am not pleased with everything he has done, I think things could have been worse, possibly much, much worse had just about anyone else been President , let alone John McCain with Sarah Palin a heartbeat away from the job.

That news article was right around the time that he was pitching his 'deal' with the republicans though. The deal that wasn't really a deal at all in the grand scheme of things, especially if he ends up signing the right's new 'Jobs Act' into law. Something I don't think will ever happen, it likely won't pass the senate.

It could have been worse, but does 'it could have been worse' justify him not working more for, not only the unemployed but the middle class in general, to make it better? He doesn't speak out against the attacks against unions either, or the attacks against public workers. He doesn't, that I've seen, speak out about much of anything that the republicans are doing to rip this nation to shreds. His silence on the issues makes it hard to tell which side of the fence he stands on. The way things are going right now, straddling it will only end up with his 'sensitive bits' impaled on it when he falls. I don't want to see it happen and I'd never vote for the likes of McCain and Palin. I didn't participate in the NoVo fiasco, but right now? Come 2012? I would have a hard time casting a vote for Obama again.

I share much of your disappointment. Even though he is attacked for being a socialist or a Marxist, he has governed as a somewhat right-leaning centrist IMHO, and that seems to be true of many of the Congressional Democrats as well.

It seems that we are gradually facing a choice between one party that is center-right and the other lunatic right, which makes no sense to me. I think that the times would dictate the need for traditional left-wing, or at least pragmatic center-left solutions. Haven't people seen the damage done by de-regulation, trickle-down economics, hypocritical culture wars, class warfare almost completely won by the rich and the huge corporations, and a general shafting of the middle class?

Whether through personality or strategy, Pres. Obama tries too hard to be bi-partisan, cool, and rational. He almost always avoids blood and guts battles over the issues, even though his opponents delight in no-holds-barred combat. I suppose there is something admirable and "Presidential" about Pres. Obama's approach, but it sure is frustrating for a lot of people, including me, who would like to see him come out swinging. I think he has that ability, but something holds him back.

One thing - one sentence in the President's speech sticks out for me.

"We know that our own future is bound to this region by the forces of economics and security; history and faith," the president said.

Unless you folks screaming treason and saying you don't care what happens in the middle east are getting around by horse and buggy- pfffft.
