kemcha wrote:Dnky, some of your facts are inaccurate. While I did read, through Huffington Post, that it was approximately 12% of their health care costs, I believe an article on Huffington Post or MSNBC.com stated that it would be about 8% of their income. The biggest item was over their collective bargaining agreement. One little important piece of information that I did uncover is that this bill would effectively ban public workers from striking, for any reason.dnky7070 wrote:The Governor is only asking the various union members to pay 12% of their health care costs. There are other things involved, and it will amount to an average of 7% of their income. They are not cutting income. It is currently costing the State $22,000. per year for each family plan. I see nothing wrong with having the employees pay 12%. The math is: 12% of 22K is $2640. or $220/month for a family plan. that is a pretty damn good deal. it is time that the Unions realize they are not in charge any more. the unions have made this country less competitive in the world market place.
I think that President Obama needs to send a mediator over this because it's obvious that Governor Walker is attempting something unprecedented.
I'm still waiting for direct links to the sources from dnky7070. Maybe I missed them in a previous post, will have to go back and look over the thread again.

Re: Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states having protests against governor bills to get rid of collective bargaining rights!
The proposal would take away most state and local workers of collective bargaining rights on everything except salary.[11]
Unions would be unable to seek pay increases above those pegged to the
Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum.[4]
In addition, unions also would have to hold annual votes to stay
organized and would be unable to force employees to pay dues.[4]
Republican lawmakers said collective bargaining rules must be changed so governments can avoid laying off thousands of workers.[12] Gov. Scott Walker has said that he will have to lay off up to 6,000 state workers if the measure does not pass.[4]

I looked, he never posted the links, Jane. I'm trying to find the source of the article where it mentions this and I'll post it as soon as I find it.

I found one article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41664858/ns/us_news-life/
They talk about some of the points that the bill addresses. Scroll to the bottom of the article, it lists some of the paybacks that public workers are being forced to deal with, under the bill. I'm still looking for other sources.

Thank you for posting the link. I'm curious though, this group was affiliated with the Sam Adams Alliance until last year and they are a non-profit. Who are the major donors for this organization? They seem to be keen on having government accountability in all things, which is a good thing, but I can't seem to find who funds them.

some people have no class whatsoever!! I was commenting on an article and i simply asked if public workers union dues go toward health ins...a woman answered me and was very rude!!! i am so sick of it and to top it off she was dead wrong! I guess not all unions put dues toward health ins. which is why i was asking, but my husbands does!! a portion of his dues goes toward health and dental. grrrr now i am all flustered! MEAN PEOPLE SUCK!! she was trying to tell me that NO union dues go toward it. I know they do because i have seen his paychecks and he has been a member for 20 yrs, so he would know!!
sorry for the rant, i just dont know why people have to be so rude

This would effectively create an "open shop".

It sucks that people can be rude and I'm sorry that it happened to you.
I'm going off to educate myself on this budget if I don't get blown away (it's very windy here today and I half expect there to be power outages).

Re: Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states having protests against governor bills to get rid of collective bargaining rights!
Don't know about your rant, but on the question, I THINK ( state and teacher )dues go to the union for union operational costs, the union lawyers are clocking big hours these days. Co pays for insurance I THINK would be separate, pre tax deductions. My mother is retired from the WI state vocational system , they still get insurance(age 79), and pay about $90/month.Sick & Tired wrote:some people have no class whatsoever!! Other unions are different. Sheet Workers local in Milwaukee was I paid dues and got insurance from the union. Worked a job 29 days and was told to go to the local and they would send me for a physical. I quit.

I guess it's only OK to protest in America when the Koch Bros. are buying.
*NOTE: According to The Washington Post,
“The president's political machine worked in close coordination
Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands
of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in
other state capitals.” And, the Associated Press reports
the President’s special-interest allies plan to spend money to gin up
similar protests in Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey,
Ohio, Missouri, New Hampshire, Maine, and Pennsylvania.

It's being reported that the protest has increased in size in Wisconsin. Last reports have as many as 25,000 protestors:

Actually the first union organized were frequently called communists and socialists. History repeats itself.

While I don't agree with everything Glenn Beck says, he does come up with some interesting points, now and then.
Ono another note, it looks like the Wisconsin strike by lawmakers could paralyze the state of Wisconsin if Democrats stay away from the state for weeks:

Re: Wisconsin, Ohio, and other states having protests against governor bills to get rid of collective bargaining rights!
There is not a
single job related benefit offered in the United States that was not the
result of the Labor Unions. The private sector and non unionized
employers had not choice but to offer "health insurance"
"retirement
benefits" etc, because their own employees were avidly looking for the
first union job they could find. Without unions not a single American
would have health insurance or employer paid for retirement plans. Well
not a single American. Not a single "WORKING" American would have those
benefits. They would not exist.
Doesn't anyone REMEMBER
Bush's plan to REQUIRE all employers to eliminate current health
insurance plans and to only provide their workers with a "high
deductible" health insurance policy, because the public has no idea of
what their health care ACTUALLY costs because their insurance is picking
up a large amount of the cost, that if they actually had to PAY a
larger share of their health care costs, they would use it less and that
would drop the price based on supply and demand.
Doesn't anyone
remember all the PENSION PLANS that went belly up under Bush. Bush
allowed all these companies to default on their "defined pension"
plans, and when the government took the pensions over, the workers were
paid ten cents on the dollar for the pensions that in many cases, they
had worked 40 years for, accepting LOWER wages because they had this
"deferred" compensation.
Businesses gained billions of dollars by robbing workers of "deferred"compensation.
FB post from a friend of mine.
