It is very sad, once a week reports of the layoffs here. Really, can't they get rid of the pork before shortchanging our children?

Education is the one place the USA should never even contemplate cutting back on! We are already so behind. These young students are the minds that will be in charge of the future.
Sad, the short-sightedness - the human folly.

It is sad if 1 good teacher is laid off. However these notices don't mean that 19,000 teachers will be laid off. It is a warning that they could be layed off

They are a notice that they could be laid off, however I noticed the following. If I'm figuring this correctly, there were 15,900 laid off two years ago (26,500 * .6 = 15,900).
My questions:
How many more/less teachers are there in California than, let's say 10 years ago?
How many more/less students are there in the public school system now compared to 10 years ago?
"Two years ago, districts handed out layoff notices to a record 26,500 teachers, but only 60 percent of them ended up losing their jobs."
