There are Care Packages for College Students, Veterans overseas, and Far Away Friends and Loved Ones. So why not Care Packages for the 99ers?
=========================================================================
We have numerous people across the nation who have been without any means of support for so long they cannot afford bus fair for a job interview or repair their broken down cars to get to a job. Even people who are working cannot afford the high cost of gasoline, let alone those without any means of paying for it. And many do not have the means to look presentable for even a job interview. Many men cannot afford a hair cut or shaving supplies, many do not have soap to wash up with or even to clean their clothes. Many have holes in their clothes and shoes wearing out. And the 99ers ladies like to look nice too, a little make-up and decent clothes. And this is just a few of the problems they face.
=======================================================================
Some Care packages are expensive because they contain a lot of frills in them and expensive fancy packaging and expensive luxury items.
Were as the Care packages for the 99ers would be in plain boxes or containers and would consist of just the everyday necessities for survival.
And would be more cost effective.
Maybe a voucher for clothes, a supermarket gift card for food, a voucher for a free haircut, soap, shampoo, tooth brush and paste, toilet paper, washing powder, etc. All the things a person needs to survive and to look presentable for a job interview. Plus maybe a Free Bus pass.
======================================================================
Volunteers could make up the packages and delivery them to the 99ers, thus saving the shipping fees. Maybe some Senior Citizens or Ladies Clubs or Teenagers or College students would be interested in volunteering for this.
Plus maybe some businesses or stores would be willing to donate some of the things needed. And would get paid back by the publicity they would get when they are mentioned in the news media.
==================================================================
These packages for the 99ers could either be shipped to their address or at a place where the 99ers could come to pick up. By using the U.S. Postal Service, the cost of shipping could be kept low. And the 99ers E-mail address would be beneficial if anyone needs to contact them regarding their order. This would be just for those 99ers who can’t afford bus fair and have no means of transportation. Most would be required to come pick up their Care package and show proof that they are a 99er.
===========================================================================
Some of these packages could contain gift cards that can be redeemed online or at stores.
===============================================================
Any ideas on how a 99er Care Package center could be started will be welcome.
===============================================================
These people desperately need this help until either unemployment benefits bills are passed or a lot more jobs are created. Until then a 99er Care Package could be a life saver.

I could use staples such as deodorant, soap, toilet paper, etc. The things that you can't buy with food stamps.

This is something the government either does not think of or does not care about, that those who have been without any funds for so long do not have the means to even get to a job interview. The employers are not going to hire someone who looks unshaven and does not have decent clothes to wear to an interview. In fact many do not have the money it takes to get there to the interview. It looks like our government is not going to help. So we are going to have to figure out how we can get something like this Care Package idea going ourselves somehow.
I do not know how it can be done. So I am posting this idea everywhere I can think of in hopes someone will read it and know how to get this started. I even sent it to some of the trusted news media. And two of them replied back that they are interested in it. Ones said she will do a news report on it when she gets a chance. The other one who hosts a radio show for the unemployed and a blog spot, invited me to post it on her site.

Every 99er who doesn't have a college degree.....at least an AA or AS degree.....should start looking into going to school at their local Community College. The deadline for filling out the federal FAFSA (financial aid form) is MAY 1ST. You might even be able to get aid to go to school this summer but at least by late Aug. or early Sept. you could be in school & getting a Pell grant & student loans & what they call a 'Work-Study Job' paying you to work 20 hrs a week.

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/#

If you already have a college degree you can apply to start at a college or university starting in the fall (or maybe even the summer) with student loans--to pursue a graduate degree. But the FAFSA deadline is looming. Must be completed by May 1st.

I think the 99ers Care Package idea is an excellent one. There are Care Packages for College Students, Veterans overseas and Far Away Friends & Loved Ones. So why not Care Packages for the 99ers ? 254328

Such as someone setting up a website to take donations. Tying donations to the idea of helping 99ers who due to academic deadlines must wait till the summer/fall to get back in school might be a good strategy because donors often like to see donations tied to some end result. Not saying everyone helped will ultimately have to 'prove' that they actually start school (some may wind up getting f/t jobs & not going to school). Once such a donation enterprise is begun.....watch out for copycats such as spam from Nigeria asking for help for 99ers.

On a smaller scale.....thru churches might be a place to start. Such as churches with the Church of Christ or Quaker Friends churches that can be known for helping the downtrodden become uplifted.

I do not think anyone has thought of Care Packages for the 99ers.
So we just have to get the word out about it to everyone we can. Girl and Boy Scout troops could handle it. Women's Clubs, Senior Citizen volunteer groups. Maybe even the Red Cross or United Way. Also we need to contact some stores and businesses and ask if they would be willing to donate some food, clothes and toiletries to the cause. Then if we could figure out how to get some Free bus passes to get to job interviews that would help too.
Maybe a voucher for a free hair cut for the men. And make-up for us ladies. I think the Salvation Army gives out vouchers for food and clothes for those in need. We just need to get the word out about this to the news media and etc. I got one Examiner.com Unemployment reporter interested in doing a story on this. And one lady who has a radio show about the unemployed and a news blog spot interested. I have not heard yet from the Huffington Post reporter. I am going to contact some more radio show hosts and ask if they would do a free plug for us on this.

This will never ever happen. You know why? Because people think we are lazy no good bums looking for a handout.

People who have jobs all say the same thing, get a job! They will truly never understand what it is like until they go through this themselves. That is the only way to change their minds. It is getting worse now. People are angry at us, like we are taking a free vacation or something!

I definitely think this subject is dividing the country, the unemployed verses the employed.

Kathy,

I know what you mean.
Just the other day I practically got the same message from a former 99er who now got a job. They think because they got one everyone should be able too. Well for one thing this 99er was living in a good area which makes a difference. And another thing they had pull from a friend who owned an unemployment agency. Most of us are not that lucky. And another thing most employers want someone fresh out of college, not someone middle aged or older for the jobs. They also think the 99ers skills are rusty if they have been out of work for years. Or prefer to hire foreign visa holders or cheap illegal alien labor. There is all kinds of discrimination going on out there.

Until we can do some advertising to change the public's view of the 99ers we will never get anywhere. A lot of people do not know that the unemployment benefits come from employers contributing to the system or that in some cases this money is taken out of the employees checks every pay day. They think it is strictly a government hand out. Which in some cases it is after everyone else goes broke. But not the case to begin with.
We also need someone to change the whole unemployment system and get it up to modern standards. It is so outdated and has not changed since it's inception back in the depression days. It is so confusing that some unemployed people do not even know what Tier they are suppose to be on. And it is also frustrating waiting so long for Congress to make up their minds whether to give benefits beyond 99 weeks. We need a whole new system that would eliminate all these problems.

   There already are care packages for the 99ers, but they are not packaged in cardboard boxes. They are in the form of unemployment benefits, SNAP, EBT, WIC, Section 8, Red Cross, Salvation Army, food banks, churches... a wide array of choices.

 =========================================================================
======================================================================

    Even 99ers know that these things are not free. Someone has to pay for them.

    Supermarket gift cards? Free toiletries?  Just who is going to fund all this?

    A free haircut?  Volunteer 99ers will be instructed how to use  barbering equipment donated from the Salvation Army. They will then give hair cuts to the other 99ers in their community.

   If I have to pay for the bus, I think the unemployed should also. Let them walk or use bicycles.

   Totally unrealistic.

  Volunteers to make up deliver packages to the unemployed?  Look, there are not scores of people out there just waiting to package and hand a gift  box to an unemployed 99er.

    Why don't we have 99ers make up the packages? We'll set up a packaging and distribution point somewhere in town, or in an old barn in more rural areas.  perhaps even the home of a 99er. A few of the brighter 99ers would be in charge of the whole operation. Other 99ers would be the packagers and couriers. They would have to show up on time, ready to work. They could pretend that they have a real job, and go through the motions of doing something productive.

    Enclosed in the gift boxes will be instructions on basic hygiene, like how to use soap, toothpaste and deodorant. There will be pictographs on how to use toilet paper.

    To save on shipping fees, have the beneficiaries come to the distribution point and pick them up. If the beneficiary cannot travel to the distribution point, due to illness, disability or lack of transportation, then have some able-bodied 99ers use their own (gasp! Rolling Eyes ) time and gas to deliver the packages. No, not the couriers, the beneficiaries that drove in to get their packages will make the deliveries.

   That's it, the unemployed using their resources to delivering to other unemployed.  Tell the 99ers making the deliveries to pretend that its like a regular job. Their pay will come in the form of an extra care package if the beneficiary calls the distribution point to say he go the package.

   Yeah, right. We'll see how long that lasts. Rolling Eyes

   Senior citizens, ladies and college students? Sorry, they are probably working or in class, and will be too tired at the end of the day of work to go find the unemployed. Some of them are probably working in soup kitchens , food banks or other public areas because they are concerned for their safety.

    Just to help keep the beneficiaries in the right frame of mind, the donated contents will all be generic or store brand, such as Walmart's "Great Value"  line. Nationally recognized or premium brands need not be included  Non-perishables such as canned food should be just past their expiration dates before putting them in the packages. The same with packaged dry goods like cereal, rice and wheat- the donator should ensure that the expiration date has passed so that the beneficiaries do not expect the same quality as someone who actually paid for it.   Make sure the cans are dented or the packaging damaged or partially opened. Perishables  such as dairy products, meat or produce will not be accepted due risk of spoilage and sanitary reasons.

     Big box and chain stores do not need the publicity.  Would you like if it was broadcast that you gave out expired or rejected products for free?     These are "for profit" entities and really do not need the public reminded that they are subsidizing the unemployed.

    There will be separate boxes for men and women. Each package will have some canned food, one or two personal hygiene products, a roll of toilet paper, and maybe a gift card for a thrift store.

    The care packages should be made locally so that there will be no issue of shipping costs.  The packaging and distribution point will be in the same location. Couriers will be those 99ers that volunteer to drive over to Walmart, Kmart and grocers to pick up the items to be donated.  The packaging will simply be liquor boxes that you can find in the back of any ABC store.

    There is not going to be any ordering. No need for email either. (Contact them regarding their order, as if they were paying for it No .) You are getting a hand-out that someone else paid for, so you just get what you get.   You come in and get what is given you. Period

   The beneficiaries will come to the distribution point to pick up their packages.  Again, the 99ers that come to the distribution points will volunteer to drive packages to those that were not able to come.

     As far as beneficiaries having to prove they are 99ers, what on earth are you thinking? drunken  Who is going to come in for expired generic and "Great Value" products, besides the unemployed? Who is going to claim to be a 99er, who is not?  Besides, I don't think you should have to wait until week 99 to start receiving gift packages.

===========================================================================
Some of these packages could contain gift cards that can be redeemed online or at stores.
===============================================================
Any ideas on how a 99er Care Package center could be started will be welcome.
===============================================================
These people desperately need this help until either unemployment benefits bills are passed or a lot more jobs are created. Until then a 99er Care Package could be a life saver.

  Gift cards? The only gift cards that should be enclosed are those Goodwill and other thrift stores.  They will simply be old 3x5 index cards that say "For GoodWill : $2.00". The recipients will not get cash back. Going online to redeem them? Razz  What is a 99er doing ordering something online? What a joke.

   I've already given you some of the particulars for starting the center. In short, the chronically unemployed should be organized into a short term non-profit entity that operates out of an old building. Actually they can run it out of their homes;  I'm sure the neighbors will appreciate all the traffic of unemployed and homeless, especially around their kids. Some will act as couriers to go collect the expired and damaged goods from the donators.  Of course, all the donated goods will arrive safely at the packaging point (hah! Laughing ). The couriers and packagers will not pilfer the best of the donated goods. (Ha ha! Laughing Laughing ). Packagers will place the goods in the old liquor boxes. Beneficiaries will drive in and help deliver the goods.

  There, that is  viable - and realistic - plan for a 99er Care Package program.
