Jesse's his father's son for sure. We need to start pushing hard for this, 589, and 870. A combo of the three would be an excellent step for us.
Re: New Bill Would Ban Discrimination Against The Jobless
...hmmmm, I wonder if they're putting all of this together so they can present it as a middle class saving package and bargain with the budget deal on it all.
Re: New Bill Would Ban Discrimination Against The Jobless
This is great news! I hope this bill makes it through.

It is about time someone is trying to stop this discrimination.

Re: New Bill Would Ban Discrimination Against The Jobless
I talked with a temporary staffing agent the other day. She indicated she wasn't sure why employers that she sends my resume to have not responded. It may be because my most recent job on my resume is 3 years old.
She wants me to update my resume with the temporary positions that I have had.

It is a well meaning step and will stop the advertising. But the problem is that the attitude will remain and it is up to the employee to prove that they are being discriminated against.

I'm going to move this to the section I started for this bill.

I was thinking this also Sunrise, but at least it's a start.

It will be tough to prove but all discrimination cases are. I think it's a hopeful sign that it is being brought out into the light. Shows the country that this is really happening, it's not all in our "the unemployed" heads. This bill has long road ahead of it in this GOP climate. If it does become a law there will be some lawyers maybe even unemployed ones that will take up the mantle and push a case.

Most definitely the law would be a good thing. It will give companies cause to think twice. It is the thinking twice that may help us to land more jobs. If employers really think about the employment crises - high unemployment, competition: 5 applicants to 1 job, and that is why many have not found work and not that we are unemployable, we may have a chance.

Imo this bill is an important step towards getting HR589 passed. This bill may or may not not pass but it shows just how hard it is to find a job for the millions who are actively searching for work every day.

Re: New Bill Would Ban Discrimination Against The Jobless
I was hoping a bill like this would get introduced. The GOP should applaud it if it helps get people back to work since they think we are all lazy but because they tend to be very hypocritical they won't. The discrimination was obvious when employers were posting signs the "only taking applications from employed workers." I believe most of them took that kind of signage down however, the attitude will prevail. A good attorney can prove discrimination especially if the company never hires unemployed workers.

I really hope so, I can't believe that they haven't even talked about HR 589 yet.

Considering that tomorrow is Thursday and that leaves just Friday for its introduction. Looks like we'll be waiting until they get back from the break.

We desperately need this bill passed along with H.R. 589 and H.R.870.

Re: New Bill Would Ban Discrimination Against The Jobless
he Fair Employment Act of 2011 (H.R. 1113), drafted by Johnson and
co-sponsored by Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.), would amend the Civil
Rights Act to make it illegal for employers to refuse to hire or to
lower compensation for a person because of employment status. Johnson
said he wrote the legislation because he was troubled by the ongoing
phenomenon of job ads specifying that a candidate "must be currently
employed."
