How can they say the 25,000 employees won't be laid off since they have no idea how long they will have to shut down the plants. Are they still going to pay them???? I would say not, so they are really being laid off....

Its a layoff. If they are told not to come to work and there is no paycheck coming in, thats a layoff!

Shutting the plants will affect 25k workers and it's not a layoff? Are they planning on getting rid of all those positions?
"Spokesman Mike Goss says the shutdowns are likely to take place later this month, affecting about 25,000 workers. But he says no layoffs are expected."

Semantics? Not considered a layoff b/c the job will never return?

That's exactly what I was thinking. Part of the problem here goes back to "just in time" philosophy. If manufacturers had a decent supply of parts, a supplier problem wouldn't impact them as quickly as it does now.

This might have given them the perfect excuse to pull up stakes, also Might of been wanting to do it for a while, but could not for various reasons.

The unfortunate part is more people will be aware of the layoffs, but will probably never learn about the plant closings if they occur.

Its a plant closing. They probably word it as a layoff if the plant were to remain open. Either way those folks are out of a job.
