McDonald's Corp National Hiring Day April 19 to Fill 50,000 Openings Nationwide
Read and watch the taped video, ABC in Chicago about McDonald hiring to fill 50,000 openings.
April 4, 2011 (WLS) -- McDonald's Corp. will hold its first national hiring day April 19 to fill 50,000 openings at its restaurants nationwide.
The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says it is making a concerted effort to add staff as its business improves and as more of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day.
McDonald's is hiring restaurant crew and management for full-time and part-time positions. The company's hiring goal translates to between three and four new hires per restaurant.
"Our business is strong, IT has been for the last several years. The business continues to grow and we need good people to satisfy our customers," said Jim Norberg, senior VP, McDonalds.
The company is hoping to maximize publicity and marketing from the hiring program and also improve the perception some people have of working at McDonald's.
Some employment experts say many potential employees are drawn to companies like Starbucks where they see better longterm opportunities. But advisors at CareerBuilder.com say that's a misperception.
"Getting in the door and getting a job, even if it's an internship, is really a good step to consider because it will set you up for years to come," said Rosemary Haefner, CareerBuilder.com
"If I can work at McDonald's, I mean why not? It's always good to have a job. A job is very important," said Lee Jones.
Norberg began his career at as a crew member at McDonald's 30 years ago making French fries. He says nearly a third of senior management came up through the ranks.
"Over 50 percent of our franchisees started in the restaurants. Forty percent of our senior leadership started in the restaurants. So this is really about promoting the great opportunities at McDonald's," said Norberg.
McDonald's held a similar event in its Western region last year. More than 60,000 people applied for the 13,000 positions.
According to McDonald's, the company is hiring at all levels. Although the majority of jobs will be minimum wage entry level, McDonald's says it is also looking for store managers and corporate jobs.
Those who are interested can apply in stores or online. Some restaurants will hold events and interviews that day.

Already applied at McDonald's a while back.....even got a spontaneous interview the same day.....the manager stated that I didn't have any food service experience.....& he asked alot of questions about why I wasn't using my communications college degree to find a job in communications.....he said that if he had any openings he'd call me. Never heard anything from him.

Ran the second only (in GA) Wendy's in Athens GA while at UGA as a stident. Didn't have the title or the pay but I started when they did and knew how it all went and the manager was a lazy bum. It was fun and I was young and didn't mind going home at 2 to 3 AM. The distruct manager tried to hore me as a manager at $28,000 but I was in for my degree. My first job was paying $11,440! Duh, stupid life move #1!

McDonald's restaurants overwhelmed by job seekers
They want jobs. They need to work. From Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove to Sunrise Boulevard in Citrus Heights, job seekers lined up before dawn Tuesday and crowded McDonald's restaurants across the region late into the afternoon on the restaurant chain's national hiring day.
The fast-food chain hoped to hire 50,000 employees for its more than 14,000 U.S. locations, including about 600 employees at its 165 sites in the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto area Tuesday.
That averages to less than three jobs per outlet nationally, although some local sites said they were planning to hire as many as 15.
That mattered little to Jason Scott of Sacramento. He just needed one.
Scott, 24, a cook and a recent transplant from Washington, D.C., had hopscotched half the city by midafternoon, filling out applications, waiting in lines, looking for work since 7:30 a.m. at one of the few places hanging the help-wanted sign.
"It's my fourth stop – two on Mack, one on Florin and then I'm here on K Street, trying my hardest," he said.
Scott hoped he had a leg up. He worked five years at McDonald's in Washington, D.C.
"I hope to show I can bring something to the table here," he said. "Hopefully, I can win here and get a job."
McDonald's didn't have a complete count on how many applicants showed up Tuesday, but so many arrived on some local McDonald's doorsteps that restaurant owners were nearly overwhelmed.
"At one point, we had 120 people outside the door, but we were able to get all 120 interviewed," said Courtney Ristuben at her Citrus Heights location on Sunrise Boulevard and Old Auburn Road.
Halfway through her four-hour afternoon hiring session, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Ristuben and her team had seen 300 job seekers. She anticipated another 300 by dinner time.
"We've seen 15- and 16-year-olds looking for their first job to people 50, 55 and over, first-time high schoolers to 20 years' experience looking for anything we have to offer," Ristuben said.
It's a sobering sign of the times in Sacramento and across the country.
McDonald's and other fast-food chains, once a first job for teenagers, appear to be turning into an employer of more adults: The average age of a fast-food worker is 29.5, up from 22 in 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
For many older job seekers, a job with health benefits is as important as the paycheck. Medical insurance, prescription drug coverage, 401(k) retirement and educational assistance are offered at some McDonald's locations.
John Ritchey Jr., part owner of a McDonald's at Arden Way and Howe Avenue, had made his way through 35 interviewees Tuesday afternoon and 80 more were waiting for face time.
"We're committed to getting everybody down the list," he said.

Gas is $4.27 here. I called afew McDonalds and asked if on-line apps were as good as walk-ins. The women I spoke to were very nice. Told me they don't even have any apps in store. I applied. Had to, sis wouldn't let it go. I worked there in HS. It is not where I thought I would be now, but I would be greatful for any job. Probably won't here from them. Never do.

I read somewhere that it amounts to 1 or 2 people per store, and that is normal for McDonalds before summer months regardless. This was a publicity stunt, I'm sure. I imagine that many fast food places aren't having the turn-over they used to, due to lack of other jobs. So my guess is that many stores may not be hiring at all.

I don't understand why this stuff happens. It's being called a hate crime now. Where is all this hate coming from?
Equality Maryland: McDonalds beating is a hate crime
"Rosedale, Md. - New developments tonight in the case of a person brutally attacked at a McDonalds in Baltimore County. Equality Maryland says the victim is a transgender woman. The organization’s board president, Chuck Butler released the following statement:"

This is off topic but not entirely. I visit a 24 hour gas station nearby, quite large and a big store inside. Sometimes for gas and others for stuff, at 7 PM and as late as 3 AM. Known for gang activity and I see a lot of them there, the tattoos and colors but dont really know who is who. Word is its the MS 13 group anyway point is they do not confront or bother me at all. I look like I came straight out from the NC mountains and I guess its peoples looks that set some people off. These are big boys and are not the least bit afraid of me but I guess I look wild enough to be left alone.. Its usually the looks and demeanor that set people off. Moral of the story is if you look and act like you are crazt, people leave you alone!
