Re: Harry Reid to chat about jobs and more: Post questions now
Here we go! Questions about HR 589, people please post your questions!
With unemployment so high, and the duration so long, dont you think it makes sense to add benefits for the long term unemployed (exhaustees)? The CBC has a bill in committee, HR 589 which would add 14 weeks of benefits to tier I. We need jobs, but we need assistance until those jobs are created. It is absolutely inhumane to let millions of people suffer through no fault of their own. Some people exhausted benefits as far back March 2010 and are still unable to find work. There are only 3 million jobs available for more than 15 million unemployed. Suicide rates and homelessness have risen dramatically. People are losing everything. It is going to take time to create enough jobs. Do you plan to push for another tier of benefits as well as job creation? If so, when? Millions are running out of time....
Senator Reid, thank you for taking the time to do this. As a 99er at 56 years old with no income for over a year and 3 months, like many others, with no possibility of employment, what can you get the Senate and Congress to agree on to get companies hiring and get aid for people who are basically starving. There has to be something that can be done to aid citizens of this country who are destitute. We need you help Senator. HR589 is languishing just as S3706 did a year ago. People need leadership, jobs and right now help. You are a member of the body of people who can help us. Please don't forget us. Thank you again.
The President and the GOP both seem intent on throwing low income people to the wolves. The Senate is our last hope. Please don't disappoint us.

Re: Harry Reid to chat about jobs and more: Post questions now
He finally answered 2 questions about the LTU, 99ers and HR 589!
Q.
Federal Job Creation Investments
Is it true that there is a significant balance of unused stimulus
money? If so, what are the barriers for investing in infrastructure
restoration projects, extending UI benefits for the "99'rs" and small
business loan programs?
A.
Harry Reid :
Money in the Recovery Act was meant to get into the economy quickly
to get the biggest bang for the buck. As the CBO just told us, the
Recovery Act in the first quarter of 2011 increased "the number of
people employed by between 1.2 million and 3.3 million, and increased
the number of full-time-equivalent jobs by 1.6 million to 4.6 million
compared with what would have occurred otherwise."

Q.
HR 589
Do you support HR 589 [The Emergency Unemployment Compensation
Expansion Act of 2011]? If yes, what are you doing to get it passed? If
no, have you a better plan to keep job hunters alive while jobs are
created?
A.
Harry Reid :
The Congressional Budget Office has told us that the best thing you
can do to help the economy in the short run is to provide assistance to
the unemployed, so we should look at that legislation to see how it
might fit within a jobs-focused package.
