Update!!! TODAY- 99er Unemployment Extension Talks Between Scott, Lee and Boehner, Cantor Set Before Shutdown
99er Unemployment Extension Talks Between Scott, Lee and Boehner, Cantor Set Before Shutdown
"99ers might soon have reason to celebrate. The 14-week unemployment
benefits extension proposal, HR589, will be discussed by Representatives
Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Bobby Scott (D-VA) with the Republican House
leadership on Thursday, April 7."
"Scott and Lee will be given a chance
to present their case for the 99ers, the long-term jobless who have
exhausted all manner of unemployment benefits while searching for a job
in the current desolate economy, and the unemployed just entering into
the long-term."
"It is as yet uncertain how long they will be given, nor
what arguments the two legislators might use, but they are expected to
present the case for HR589 along with the means by which to cut federal
spending in order to pay for the extension."
"It is doubtful the meeting will take long, more than a quick exchange of
pleasantries and ideas, proposals to offset the bill, and perhaps a few
suggestions for possible areas in which jobs can be created (suggested
by Rep. Cantor's office after the agreement to meet was reached)."
" Why?
Two reasons: Pressures of the looming government shutdown deadline,
which has captured much of the media's attention, and either the
Democratic lawmakers will have found offsets that are agreeable to
Republicans or will be open to suggestions from Boehner and Cantor. If
those conditions do not exist, the meeting will end with promise for the
future of the bill.

Thanks for posting this article Need2B. I was afraid that Boehner would use the looming govt. shutdown as an excuse to cancel the meeting. Praying hard that they are serious about considering HR589.

Boehner is really nervous on what this shutdown could do to the R's. This just might be something he can try and get passed to make them look as if they have some kind of heart. Ought to be interesting, to say the least. Tp'ers may have other thoughts on this though.

Me too Gigi. I think you're right about Boehner wanting to find a way to look more human Knarf. The Tpers will be the downfall of the Republican party in any future election if Americans are paying attention at all. They were on the news this morning chanting "shut it down." They don't seem to have a clue what that really means for this country.
