April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
Dow Jones:
AP:DJ DATA SNAP:US April Payrolls +244K; But Jobless Rate Rises To 9.0%
By Luca Di Leo and Jeff Bater
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--U.S. companies added more jobs than expected in
April, but the unemployment rate rose for the first time in five months and the
economy's recent slowdown is likely to keep a lid on future gains.
Nonfarm payrolls rose by 244,000 last month, as the private sector posted the
strongest employment gain in five years, the Labor Department said Friday in
its survey of employers. The March data was revised upward slightly to show an
increase of 221,000 jobs, from a previous estimated gain of 216,000.
However, the unemployment rate -- which is obtained from a separate household
survey -- rose to 9.0% last month from 8.8% in March. It was the first increase
in the jobless rate since November, when it hit 9.8%.

The BLS Employment Situation Summary--
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
The number of Discouraged Workers has decreased.....so be prepared for a flurry of stories saying that the reason the UE rate has increased is due to the return of Discouraged Workers looking for work again.

The U6 rate is up from 15.7% in March to 15.9% in April--
http://portalseven.com/employment/unemployment_rate_u6.jsp
So U3 is up from 8.8% to 9.0%.....meaning more people unemployed.....& U6 is *also* up.....meaning more people underemployed.
This is bad news & will continue to get worse thru the summer.

Where did the 244,000 new jobs come from when over the last four weeks the new jobless claims were at roughly 200,000...
But again why did yesterdays news show new job in April at 179,000 andfunny they said economist were disappointed at the 179,000 new jobs being so low. Guess they revised to a comfort zone so economist could feel better!!!

Man how they change the numbers I just opened a link to April new jobs and it said 290,000 new jobs were created... Amazing to live with all this BS, and lies...Its election time. So if UE goes to 9% and new jobless claims are at 479,000 guess the pres. can call pals and say Hey! Show new jobs created at 290,000. No call them back and show 320,000. That will work...

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
UE1208--Don't know where you're getting all those numbers from. In the days before the Employment Report is released (which was today) economists *estimate* what they think the number will be (& they're always wrong).....so that might be what you were looking at.
This is today's official report which everyone can read for themselves--
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
Nuttin--As for Marginal Workers (who want to work & have looked for work in the past year.....but didn't look for work in the past 4 weeks) the report clearly states this info.
{{{NOTE.....Whether or not someone is getting or not getting UI has nothing to do with the Employment figures. There is a *separate report* that comes out telling how many people apply for UI, get UI, ect.}}}
I'm curious about how the Employers reported hiring so many workers yet the U3 & U6 rates have increased. It must be that the population of working-age people (16+) has increased.....yet even tho the number of jobs available has increased it's not sufficient to compensate for the increase of people looking for work.

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
I saw the job created numbers on two media networks on wed...they both said the 179,000 was disappointing to the economist who hoped they would be better... Thats what they said on wed.......Changes with he weather!!!After election time is at hand!
I saw it on Fox and msnbc and my local news networks. They said 179,000 new jobs was a disappointment. So I guess if they're a disappointment then change them to become more suiting at will... !

In that case what you were seeing were the ESTIMATES by so-called experts (economists) that come out each month a few days before the official report is released. Those estimates are always wrong so it's really sad that the media pays attention to them.

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
OK, Here is another scenario: Long and drawn out but bear with me and this coincides with your questions about UE going up. But when the unemployment new claims dropped to 378,000 and the UE rate went immediately to 8.8% now again that was new claims dropped from prox. 423,000 down to 379,00 over a couple of weeks and the UE rate changed to 8.8% . Now new jobless claims rose to 479,000 and the unemployment rate is back to 9%.. Of course not the 9.6%... Right a bunch of 16 yr olds just showed up to get a job and dropped out of school!!! But I guess they decided to add the McDonald's 150,000 to the new jobs created. Bottom line from all the jocking of the new job numbers is this: IT AIN'T GETTING BETTER. They are manipulating the numbers to their benefit and who is going to prove them wrong! IT ain't better! Not with Gas at 420/gal... IT ain't better!

Sorry philly. It was not an estimate. They reported the new jobs created was 179,000 and why would they say economists were disappointed and wouldn't you think would say OH! Wait til the real numbers come out on Fri?? Also 179,000 up to 244,000.. WOW! BIG BIG BIG difference! and now all of a sudden they jump to glorious numbers. Give me a break!

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
Claims for Unemployment Compensation have nothing to do with the Unemployment Rates (U3/U6) & the Nonfarm Payrolls report.
The UC claims numbers are kept by a different office of the govt in a different set of reports.
The U3 & U6 Unemployment Rates are based on the Current Population Survey of 60,000 households. The Nonfarm Payrolls (244,000) is based on a survey of Employers.
The Unemployment Rates & the Nonfarm Payrolls numbers may be 'bull' but if so they're the same bull that've been used since 1948. Governments have to have *some way* of reporting their unemployment rates & nonfarm payrolls.....& this is the way our govt has been using for 63 years.
Imo simply dismissing them as bull makes the unemployed look foolish.

As I said.....the so-called economist experts who each month 'guess' what the Nonfarm Payrolls will be are *ALWAYS WRONG*.....always always always wrong. Look back over the years & you'll see how wrong they always are.....off by thousands & thousands.unemployed2long/1208 wrote:Sorry philly. It was not an estimate. OK, Then with that logic, doesn't one think that when they announce disappointing numbers and the economist say "Oh we were expecting better numbers ".. AND all of a sudden they show at a revised number of 244,000 new jobs then they all break out the whiskey and congratulate themselves !!! GIVE ME A LONG BREAK!!!! Never mind, I have been on a break too long anyway!!!

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
Who is *THEY*?????????????
You're confusing 3 entirely different groups of people.
(1) The private-sector economists who announce their *estimates* of what the U3 & Nonfarm Payrolls numbers will be a few days before the BLS publishes its official report every month. These economists are always wrong & it's unclear why anyone listens to them. I think it's because people on Wall Street *BET* on what the official numbers will be. The gamblers use the estimates to decide what to place their bets on.
(2) The govt employees at the BLS who conduct the household & employer surveys & publish the official report every month.
(3) The media who enjoys focusing on (1) for mindless chatter when they should only pay attention to (2).

Sorry folks, they pushed my rant button BUT: I believe the republicans that are bringing up the amendment bill to offset the unemployment 14 weeks to go for jobs creation to be used by the states and eliminate Unemployment benefits know that 589 will pass and this is their way of manipulating it or sabotaging it. Why can't they just introduce a jobs bill However "One that works".

Re: April Jobs Report Beats Expectations: 244,000 Jobs Created; Jobless Rate 9%
Philly, I am glad the focus has changed for some and some are happy with the numbers and that puts food on your table. The job creation numbers created from a miracle, does this mean all has found a job!If not why not? after all they created 244,000 new jobs, why don't many unemployed find one!
Sorry, but heck, with the lies and inconsistent numbers and new jobs gov. or private sector. The news media said 179,000 on Wed and now its 244,000.... Hello! If one doesn't have a job then these numbers don't mean Poop! Unless you say we are not looking! I am just tired in the inconsistency! And yes 200,00 Plus new jobs are great IF they were not offset each week from 400,000+ new jobless claims. Its a status Que and winless situation. The only hope is that some who have been unemployed so long may be one of the lucky one's who get those jobs! Thats the problem.. It isn't getting better, because ok one month 200,000 new jobs were created and whoop's. Each week the new jobless averages 400,000 plus. We are not gaining BUT with 200,000 or more new jobs created that MAYBE, just MAYBE some who have been out of work for 1 or 2 yrs. or more can land one of those jobs! Thats the real picture!!!
Sorry Philly, I should not have been so harsh with you and made it sound so personal...
