589 and the 99er's
Just saw on news msnbc and fox that there are 8.2 million receiving unemployment benefits. Truth being exposed! Isn't it strange that when there were 9.6% on unemployment and it was shown the unemployed numbers were prox. 4.5 to 6 million. but now truth is being shown at 8.2 million. Numbers glitch??? 8.8% equals 8.2 million but 9.6% unemployment only equals 4 to 6 million on benefits. Now how about the 13 to 15 million 99er's that was also shown on the news ??? And growing especially with Gas going through the roof. Is it really getting better??? I don't think so!

Re: 589 and the 99er's
I posted this in another thread of it's own, but
http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2011/04/30/number-of-the-week-millions-set-to-lose-unemployment-benefits/
Yeah, 1208, it's not getting better, but the fact that the truth is being exposed IS a good thing for us.

Re: 589 and the 99er's
You know on something else related. I believe what I am about to say! That is the political system often looks at the unemployed and homeless or almost homeless as though this is what we have been forever and that we are what we are and where we are because we are lazy and don't want to work. etc, etc!! But they truly do not realize that before the economy fell to heck and all the vast numbers of folks who became unemployed due to failed policies of mostly republican admins. and we are the casualties. We have been and were very respectful people who worked and fed our families and did things with our families and was able to live life the so called American dream. Just to live is a dream.. But since our loss of jobs we have lost everything and have lost homes ad ability to pay our expenses and now we are the black sheep and its our fault.... Sorry, politicians its your fault. But its easier to blame us to take the heat off of your failures! All of them! Both parties!!! Sad day!

It's true, both parties own some portion of this mess, but at least some of the Dems seem to get it? Actually I think many of them do, even those that choose to ignore us because they don't know what to do about it.
The Republicans are the ones that truly frighten me because they BELIEVE their rhetoric about us being lazy bums that smoke pot and watch Oprah all day.

The republican agenda seems to scare me more now! they talk about dems and how they want to have death panels and such but yet its the republicans who want to hurt many seniors with medicare cuts and destroy SS lifelines and also take care of the rich and make the jobless and seniors the sacrificial lambs! I truly believe this! Yet talk about the dems....

Re: 589 and the 99er's
I believe ALL the unemployed need to do a MEDIA BLITZ via tweets and emails because HR 589 must pass through the republican majority Congress and they are too busy trying to get even with those organizations that supported the Healthcare Bill. Paul Ryan submitted his Budget Bill that wouldn't make a dent in the deficit for 20+ years but it passed the republican controlled Congress which tells us they could care less about the unemployed because they want the White House and they want the #'s to RISE even higher to blame it on President Obama. Its all about politics until the MEDIA throws the dirty water at them! Someone mentioned about being chastised on other websites for posting or saying to keep emailing and tweeting, and its is true but we know it politics Nov 2012. We must continue to get OUR voices heard in unison because we don't have nelp.org and I don't see much from AFL-CIO about the unemployed and certainly not the 99ers.

Re: 589 and the 99er's
What I fear is going to happen is Summer Break and HR 589 still in Committee, the numbers will continue to RISE as we know until the fever pitch begins with HR 4213 recipients crying the blues and separate from the ever rising stats of 99ers, in comes nelp.org for those HR 4213 recipients and the 99ers swept under the rug out of site once again! I have no answers but something has to done before those asses leave on summer break. I have emailed Rep. Lee and also both my Senators too many times to mention and will continue to do so but its disheartening because the 99ers has NO major organization with some little connection to D.C. Ed Schutz couldn't do it alone but he certainly tried!

Hi 1208...Not going to be a sacrificial lamb for any one person or corrupt political system, they haven't taken us down yet, stay strong, and keep the thoughts of them winning out of your head...that is what I do....keeps me going some how

We MUST drown them with contact when they come back from their break - CIK drafted a message that we can use on the Gearing Up for Monday thread.

Not to be pessimistic but, now that they're back it will be debt limit and budget and spending bills and that could go on a while. While we keep faxing, calling, e-mailing and more Lee and supporters need to try to bring to forefront and get out of committee! Please!!!!!

Re: 589 and the 99er's
Do remember when UE bills were treated as emergencies? when the Senate returned from the many long breaks, they would fit them in, no matter how much we call, fax, email, plead...they don't respond like they did last year. I will join in the contact emphasizing on Rep Lee. I want to get direct info from her office, then I will move on to the others. That is my planunemployed2long/1208 wrote:Not to be pessimistic but, now that they're back it will be debt limit and budget and spending bills and that could go on a while. You're right - there used to be some urgency for the unemployed but this was before the '99ers' came on the scene. Once you are not being counted it seems that you're easier to forget. It is almost like the Exhaustees are invisible!

The shift has gone from helping the unemployed to "balancing the budget" with draconian cuts to essential services.

I have been aware of the "republican types" my whole adult life....
They DON"T scare me in the long run I almost pity them....
they just DON"T get it....
If you remeber back in the early days of Rock N Roll...
Little Richard would cut a record, then Pat Boone would do a tamed down cover of it....
Somebody was buying Pat Boones records....

It's all in framing the argument and coming up with catch phrases people will remember. "Death panel" is memorable, so is "progressive". Recently WI governor Walker called his budget "progressive" and said he had fun with that.
Part of what is needed for any assistance for the unemployment to go through is a new way to frame it. How about calling it a "life line" instead of a "safety net" because without extra assistance there will be people that die. I have no real answers on what to call it, but a new term needs to be used and used by everyone in the media.

Please don't take this the wrong way but now that bin Laden is gone, maybe Pres. Obama can turn his attention to the unemployed. We need someone to step up and advocate for us. I know he is so busy he cannot just concentrate on UI but a nudge from him could help.
