Thank God Geithner is no Greenspan. That old fool is in large measure responsible for the Great Recession. As for the dollar being the world's primary reserve currency, I can't see that happening before we are all dead, and it will have nothing to do with our current or future debt. Even if it happens, it won't be the end of the U.S. By the way, the bulk of the debt is owned by Americans not the Chinese.

One more thing. The problems in Greece have nothing to do with its money not being the world's reserve currency. Greece's problem is that its debt is denominated in euros, a currency over which Greece (unlike the US) has no control. Greece is like a household, or a city, or a state. Countries like the US, Canada, Australia, China, etc. are not limited in such control, unless they are foolish enough to peg their currencies to another country's currency. Countries that attempt to do that usually end up in a big mess.

The hypocritical GOP* deficit hysteria is bogus through and through. It is designed to fool people into accepting their "extremist right-wing social engineering"** and further tax cuts for the rich. Be not deceived. Know your enemy.

What will replace the dollar as the world's premium currency? The euro? The EU is imploding. The yuan? Does anyone in their right mind trust the Chinese? The yen? Uh, earthquake, nuclear meltdown, crappy, unsafe cars. The pound? The days of "Rule Britannia" are LONG gone. Nice weddings though. What's next in line? Somebody's peso?

The US is so da** lucky. The dollar is the world's gold, and we own all the mines. Of course, in fiscal matters, we have to be prudent. That's always the best policy in all things, but part of that prudence as applied to fiscal matters is not whipping up senseless hysteria, the real goal of which has absolutely nothing to do with the budget and everything to do with a wild demolition of our long-standing safety net, the very mark of a civilized society.
